Payroll workload

Looking for advice from anyone working in payroll. I currently work for a small payroll bureau it's my first payroll job so I have no experience elsewhere to compare the role to. Just wondering how many clients you would typically be expected to look after in a full time administrator role. I've looked online and can't find anything just job adverts stating looking after a caseload of clients.

I think it would depend on the size and type of client you would be looking after, although with a payroll bureau it would tend to be small and medium sized businesses as for large firms it would tend to be more cost effective to have a payroll function in-house.
As a rule of thumb for the firm I work for (not a payroll bureau, but we do offer payroll services) a full time employee who looks after payroll only would handle a portfolio of 100-150 clients which would be a mix of monthly and weekly payrolls, ranging from small 1-10 employees and larger firms up to around 50-100 employees. Duties would include all payroll PAYE and Pension admin.
