I work within the NHS, on Monday I put my notice (one month) in having accepted another job within the NHS, but closer to home. As I only work Thursdays & Fridays my last shift is on xmas day...having done a rough calculation, I think I will be owed some leave.. As the managers are all WFH, I intended to leave it a week before asking for my leave balance to be confirmed, to give them time to work it out (I did say in my resignation that any leave owed could be taken when mutually agreeable)..I am happy to work xmas day, as our family Christmas is based around me working... should I be chasing this before next week, so I know what I'm doing?.. they're not great managers, but not do I want to seem pushy...

Why does it matter if you seem “pushy”?

wishingitwasfriday · 02/12/2020 21:53

They might say they'd rather pay you for the leave you are owed. I imagine it's a busy time of year for leave and so they might not be able to give you the time off. But I don't think you'll seem pushy for asking now.

Congratulations op. Everywhere I've worked we all state what leave we want and then the management make a decision about 6 weeks ahead.

I didnt put in for leave over xmas. The other person I match up with on the leave rotator has put in for leave over xmas, and I put in for new year - I have adult children, she has little ones. I just dont want them to put me on leave and cancel hers and call her in for xmas day.

Ahh. You sound lovely.

Maybe just make that clear when you talk to them about leave owed?

PortalooSunset · 02/12/2020 22:36

I'd plan around working Christmas Day and enjoy it as a bonus if you don't have to. Sounds like you were planning to work it anyway so where's the hurry in chasing it?

BashfulClam · 03/12/2020 12:56

Ask if they would like you to take it or pay you for it.

HopeAndDriftWood · 03/12/2020 13:06

In that case I'd ask - so if they aren't willing to pay you for your leave and want you to take it, you can either agree a date before Christmas to have off, or if they insist you take Christmas Day, so that the other lady has more notice of needing to work it.

Problem solved...had a conversation with HR today. I had 29hrs of leave left. Have taken the next 2 weeks off as leave, being paid for 5hrs and working as planned xmas eve and xmas day...
