I am wondering if anyone can throw any light on this situation please and tell me whether this is acceptable or not? How would you feel etc.

A year or so ago a few schoolfriends contacted me for a catch up meal. Talking 50 + years! but we live in the same town and went to the same schools - nursery to secondary Our paths have crossed a little over the years through one thing and another.

Anyway, I was asked if I'd like to do some ad hoc work for the company she works for. I agreed. I wasn't working at the time so I didn't give up another job for this.

Although the job was 'in the bag' I filled out application form, gave references, filled out safeguarding stuff. All good.

The job was a bit of a pain sometimes as I would turn up - person that I was meant to be working with not there, things cancelled. These things happen. When it went well, it was a good experience for us all.

After a few months things start to pick up with more work. Very happy me - unfortunately then bloody Covid came.

Anyway, I haven't heard anything so messaged boss friend to ask if I still had a job as I may need to approach agencies now. The answer I got was very nice but basically as there is no need for me atm, then sorry but good luck! She knows it's a pain going to interviews and that.

Am I being ott to think this is an odd way to work even if someone is a friend and working on an ad hoc basis?

I will have to ask her for a reference at some point and am just wondering if perhaps I was just crap. I did have some good feed back so hopefully it's not that. I can be honest with her but just wanted an outsider's perspective before I say anything.

Thanks

Double check with her.... otherwise yes, it's a bit shit.

Don't take it personally, it's how zero hours contracts work. It's not you that is crap, it's the at will hire and fire system that is.

Thank you for replies. Double check what @foxyroxyyy?

How were you being paid? Through PAYE payroll? If not, then you weren't employed as such and you were just freelancing surely.

Through PAYE payroll. I am/was employed

You are probably right @Hayeahnobut but a phone call would be... well courteous maybe.

You are probably right *@Hayeahnobut* but a phone call would be... well courteous maybe.
I agree a phone call would have been good manners but in general I have found people do not like delivering bad news, so they take the cowardly and lazy option and say nothing. Not your job to correct their bad behaviour - get a reference and move on. I really hope you find someone better to work for, good luck!

Sorry, I meant double check she wasn't unhappy with your performance
