New job but not being released from old

I applied for an externally advertised job within the same organisation that I currently work and was successful. I gave my notice and a start date of 1st was agreed. However they have told. Me I'll need to stay in my current told for an extra 2 weeks due to staff shortages.
I am happy to accept an exentension once but am concerned that it will get extended again.
Is this allowed? I am sure my contract probably has something on like 'or any other duties deemed nesscary'
I have gone from part time to full time to take on this new position and do not want to be full time in my old role like Ive ended up being.

Has this been agreed with your new line manager? I would get in touch with them and seek reassurance that they were consulted on the extra 2 weeks extension and can confirm that your new start date will be xxxx

If you gave your notice period, you could have said no to the extension!

You gave your notice and start date was agreed . Have you served your full notice period or is it shorter? .
Saying that last 2 jobs I asked if I could leave a shorter notice and both times it was agreed , I'd be annoyed if after it was agreed i was told to stay.
Just tell them it's agreed and you can't go back and tell them otherwise and go from there .

If it’s in the same company then yes it’s allowed and fairly common where I have previously worked.
You can say no but that may do you no favours

Oblomov20 · 02/12/2020 06:52

Have you informed your new line manger of this? It's kind of up to them, to either fight it or accept it.

Not within the same employer you couldn't. The employer could simply withdraw the offer of the new role and leave you in the existing one, then you work or leave. Amongst some employers this is pretty common practice, and the existing manager may have to actually give permission for the individual to move to a mew role in the company.

I think I know who you work for op.There is currently a lot of movement like this s in my organisation

Even if you don't, it's the same reason all round. They can't spare you right now and need to fill your old role before you move.

Your contract is with the same company, they control when you move jobs. Though you might have a case for your hours not increasing until you actually move.
