I have an virtual interview and they have said they will send me a link in the email. Do I need to download the app or set uk an account or do I just click on the link? Never down it before and nervous as it is 😬😬

You can just click on the link in the email and open it up in your browser.

I've done a few during lockdown and found them a lot less nerve wracking than the real thing! Good luck Smile

You can just click on the link in the email. I’ve interviewed on Teams recently and it was very straightforward. Good luck for your interview!

Good luck. I have my first one in Dec..thanks for advice McDougal

It depends on what app they are using. Some like Teams, you can use a link, but with Zoom, it's a code.

My tips

log on a day or two before hand (anti social hours in case anyone is using the account) to check it all works.

Ensure your device is well charged before your interview.

Have a standby device ready - I use my tablet, but will have my phone or a laptop with the link handy, just in case there is a technology fail.

Watch your background - people in the background, a messy room behind you, any embarrassing posters on the wall. You can blur the background if needed, but I tend to sit with my back to wall as far as possible.

Put yourself on mute when the interviewer is speaking and unmute when you need to talk. This avoids any interference and background noise.

Make sure you copy and paste the Teams URL (web link) into Chrome web browser to run your session.

Don't try running Teams in Internet Explorer as Microsoft has stopped supporting IE so Teams doesn't run well in it.

I'm not sure about Firefox, but Chrome is fine as I use it most days.

Harmarsuperstar · 27/11/2020 21:22

I had to use an app because I was using my phone

AuditAngel · 27/11/2020 21:25

I have used Teams to interview people for jobs, and we recruited one team member that way. My boss interviewed another in person (January I think) while I was on a phone.

Agree with the advice about trying in advance, and beware of other people in the house, interrupting etc.

Takethewinefromtheswine · 27/11/2020 21:31

As pps said, try it before. I didnt blur my background because it cuts off bits of your head if you move. I did it with a (brutal) friend who checked out my background, organised height of me v laptop and was kind enough to sit through costume changes.
Don't look at the mini you in the corner, cover it if needed.
I stuck post its with things I MUST INCLUDE along the top of the laptop as prompts which I found v helpful, though if it will throw you, ignore this!

I have done three rounds via
Teams to get my current job. And i have interviewed about 60 candidates myself. You should be able to click the link in the email or paste it into the browser. Could a friend who uses it for work send you a link so you could do a test?

You will be told you are waiting in the lobby until they admit you. Its easy and don't panic if something goes wrong. Ask for a phone no in case there are tech issues. We all spend half our lives shouting. Julie you are on mute!!!

Camera icon on screento turn camera on and off and mic icon to turn mic on and off.

Make sure you know how to tilt camera/adjust laptop lid. Or you chair or have a book handy to shove under laptop etc. The worst interview i did was staring at a random guys forehead for an hour.

trilbydoll · 27/11/2020 21:39

As a pp said, use Chrome or Edge. If you have a friend with an account do a dry run, I find the sound works better in Edge but that could be my work computer. Or download the app yourself, I've somehow acquired it with no account and it does work better than in a browser.

Put the laptop on some books to raise it up otherwise you'll look about 10st heavier than you actually are, which will in turn distract you during the interview.

Teenagetrials · 27/11/2020 21:39

Stick post it notes behind your computer screen on the wall with pre-prepared prompts - you probably won’t need them, but it’s great to think you can look up and get an answer!

Dickorydockwhatthe · 28/11/2020 08:32

OK thank you everyone. It's at 3.15 an Di finish work at 3pm!! I live 5-10 mins down the road so hopefully will get back. Husband going to send up laptop and I wilk have my phone of all fails. They are already having issues so I don't even have the link yet 😭 ps liking the idea of notes 😁

I've had an interview over teams.
Check what you look like on camera with the room lighting.i need lipstick otherwise I look washed out. Brighter coloured tops are best.
Don't be afraid to ask them to repeat something if you don't hear it

ProtectedPeas · 28/11/2020 09:45

Remember to have a pen and a piece of paper handy to make notes on the questions if they are extra long and don't be afraid to ask the interviewer to repeat. Good luck!

flowery · 28/11/2020 14:07

Practice first. Although you should be able to just paste the link into Chrome, have a go using Teams yourself first so that you’re familiar with it.

Half an hour or so before you start, start a Teams call with yourself so you can see that the camera angle is right, the lighting is ok, the top you’re wearing doesn’t make anything go fuzzy and that you’ve got the right speakers/microphone selected. You don’t want to log on to your interview and then be adjusting your camera angle.

Blankiefan · 28/11/2020 14:43

I've done sooo many teams / zoom / webex interviews now.

All of PP advice is spot on but I'd also add - try to look at the camera if you can. Especially while you speak or if they're talking at length. This mimics eye contact. Its totally unnatural and you need to somehow simultaneously keep an eye on their faces to read for their reactions! But it does help with connection if you can manage it.

Blankiefan · 28/11/2020 14:45

Some people put a draw an eye on a post it note and put it beside the camera to remind themselves.
