Hi all, hope this is the right place for this
I am going to be a FTM with partner of 3.5 years - very excited/scared/all normal feelings everyone has! We haven't even had the baby yet, and all I can think about is money because we're just in the process of buying our first house so will have a big monthly payment for the first ever time!
I hope the below is laid out ok, and makes sense, I really suck at maths so apologies in advance...!
I currently earn £32,410 per year before tax.
I will receive EMP in the form of 100% salary for 20 weeks, then SMP for 19 weeks.
I will have 8.5 days of AL accrued between start of AL holiday entitlement in 2021 and start of ML.
I will accrue 33 days of AL whilst on leave (if I take the full 52 weeks).
8.5 + 33 = 41.5 days total AL between Jan 2021 and end of ML, so 41.5 ÷ 5 = 8.3 working weeks worth of AL.
Original plan was to end ML at 44 weeks and use 8 weeks of my AL to take the full 52 weeks, meaning there is only a few weeks completely unpaid.
However... I really do not want to return full time. I highly doubt I'll have my flexible working application approved either (2 days in office, 1 day WFH, 2 days off) as my Manager has already mentioned she doesn't think I could do my current role part time so would either need to leave, or to take a lesser role, which means around 8k pay cut straight away.
Anyway, couple of questions;
- Can anyone help me work out/ show me a way to work out what my income would actually be each month, based on the above split in EMP/SMP and AL pay?
- Can anyone help me work out/ show me a way to work out whether it could be more sensible to simply not return at the end of the 39 weeks of EMP/SMP and instead remove the 41.5 days from the EMP clawback, so the repayment is less painful? Ideally I'd like to find some PT work which is outside of the hours my other half works (he leaves at 6am and returns home around 2 or 3pm) so that we don't need to find childcare and we still have some sort of income?
- If I did get my flexible time working approved, would it be stupid to use all of my accrued leave, as working PT means I'd accrue AL much slower?
- Any advice/ suggestions on alternatives?
We are fortunate to both have so far Covid-proof jobs, and having looked online most PT jobs are in supermarkets or caring roles, both of which I'd be open to (I used to be a carer).
My current job is stressful and I've realised I'm not a career person. My goal was to earn enough to save a deposit for a family home and we have achieved that now. Luckily our repayments are due to be quite low, so our combined income only needs to equal what I have been earning on my own, if we have no childcare costs to consider.
Appreciate anyone who got this far, and thank you for reading!
