Would you move for an equivalent role

I’m considering making a side step to take the same role in a different organisation, it’s further way from home but it’s likely to involve a lot of home working.

My motives are it’s a more progressive employer, bigger opportunities and the service I would manage is much larger (I know the pay doesn’t reflect this).

In my mind this means improved job security, better experience ready for the next step up, and a more enjoyable and challenging experience. I should confirm I will retain service by moving to this employer.

Any thoughts, as I’ve mad a lot of poor decisions in the past on reflection.

Was the decision you made poor or was the outcome? If it was the decision why was it poor, what had you failed to consider?

Thanks for the reply, I suppose it was the outcome. As a result of lockdown and changes that are being made as a result, my reason for taking current role was no longer a factor. :)

I would (I thought you meant move house - area geographically - at first and I wouldn't do that). In all honesty I probably will as I'm not interested in moving into management but will eventually want a new challenge/ different client group/ change generally and I don't think its that healthy to stay in one role, with the same team, for much over 5 years.

If you have reasons for moving role and have been in the role you do now long enough not to look flighty, then the only reason not to move is probation/ last in first out. If you are in a fairly secure type of job that is not a worry, it depends what you do obviously.

I did this 12 months ago, I had been with my employer for 10 years and in the same role for 5 years (at the top of where I can go in my sector) - I took on an hour commute each way (previously 15 minutes) and only managed to negotiate a salary which paid me the same once commuting costs were deducted. However, it is a much larger, progressive organisation and perceived this to be a step up.

If you had asked me in the first 3-6 months I would have advised against it - but now I am so pleased I made the move. I had almost become institutionalised in my previous workplace, whilst my new setting has a very different culture and a very complex management structure it has been so beneficial to my development to have to navigate these, build new working relationships, establish myself and my capabilities - looking back, I took a lot of this for granted in my previous role simply as a result of longevity and internal promotion.

I now really enjoy my new workplace, its presenting new challenges and I'm having to grow and adapt in different ways. I'd agree with a PP now that generally its not healthy to stay in the one role, with the same team for too long.

Hope you reach a decision which makes you happy.
