Tax refund

I started a new job in February and was put on an emergency tax code for March and so overpaid in tax. Employer tells me because it was in the previous tax year they couldn't refund me in my April wages so I'd have to wait for HMRC (NHS employer so assume they know what they are talking about).

According to the HMRC website they will send you a form to fill in between April-Oct if they think you've overpaid tax to claim a refund. Not had the form.

Have tried to ring them on several occasions but difficult due to working full time, only get half an hour lunch and offices are closed at weekends. Lines seem very busy this year due to covid I expect.

Anybody in the same boat/advice?

Create a personal tax account www.gov.uk/personal-tax-account
Then look through all the data for the last tax year to confirm that the total of Income Tax paid is too much.
Then see if Webchat is available and use that to talk to an HMRC adviser.

In my experience I've not had any forms to fill and I get a cheque around this time of year. Obviously due to covid, things might be delayed. Do you have a personal tax account account? If you login to that it'll likely show the overpayment amount & you can send secure messages through the account. If you don't have one you can set it up easily via gov.uk

You can also try this online system for claiming a refund: www.gov.uk/claim-tax-refund

I have been hearing of P800s arriving with people this week, so maybe you already have something on route. No harm though to try to prompt HMRC to look at your account and process a refund if one is due.

Yes go online and create a government gateway account which will let you get to tax pages and fill in your details and it should generate the refund. We did it for my son (school student) who was taxed during a paid work placement.
