Help applying for a lower position what to out in cover letter...

I hate the company I work for and am only on 20p more per hour then my colleagues who are lower positions and yet I'm a deputy manager. I do not have contracted hours or sick pay. And my current position is really stressful. I've found a job which is working less days (which I prefer) slightly less money (20p) but is also a lower position and less stress. I've been at my current place for 10 years training as a student and working my way up so slightly nervous about the change but I'm starting to hate my job and resent my work load for such little pay. I need to write a cover letter so what would I put in it and how would I explain wanting to drop positions?

Speak to your manager first, explain your position. After the meeting give them an application letter explaining why you would be great at the job, leaving all of the negative stuff you discussed with your manager out of the letter. In the meantime apply elsewhere - it sounds as though the company you work for does not appreciate training, experience and extra duty. 20p for all of that extra hassle for goodness sake!

Just reread your post - I was assuming the new job is at the same company?

Say for you this is about the opportunity to work for the new company and learn their procedures and gain experience. You can still say you hope to work for them long term and build a career there and your previous experience will be a valuable help to you both in starting work there in the advertised position and in your aims for progression in the new company long term.

Try framing it not as 'stepping down' but investing in a career with a new company, a company that invests more in its people. Kill them with flattery, without being rude about your previous workplace. Look at their company history and find values that you agree with, say it's a decision based on principles and they are a better fit for you.

I'm reaching here, maybe someone more experience with recruitment could offer better advice!

I can’t find the post now (it was years ago) but someone gave very good advice on how to alter your cv when applying for a post you were over qualified for. It was along the lines of just changing the language - eg instead of managing a project, you worked on or were involved with a project. That sort of thing.

Dont talk about why you want to leave a job talk about why you want the new one.
