Notice period discrepancies

I've worked for a long time and in a lot of places but I've never had a contract where the notice period the employer has to give is different to the notice period the employee has to give until now. Is that common? We're talking about the employee having to give twice as much notice as the employer.

What does that make you feel about the kind of company it is? I feel uneasy. AIBU?

Hopeful bump. I want to be sure I'm not making a mountain out of a molehill.

It is common if it's a relatively senior role

Not normal, and not good practice. If an employer wants, say, three months’ notice from an employee, they ought to be prepared to give the same.

topcat2014 · 09/11/2020 20:55

Very uncommon that way round. Not as uncommon for employer to have to give more.

topcat2014 · 09/11/2020 20:56

Realistically if they only want to give a month I would give a month on leaving without a backwards glance

The notice period I would have to give is already significantly less than I would normally expect. It is a relatively senior role. The notice they would have to give me is laughable.

It doesn't sit right with me and yet I had thought they were a very fair and responsible employer.

Perhaps if you say what the notice period is, and the level of role, people can say how that compares to elsewhere?

Cuntracted · 09/11/2020 21:28

It's senior in a small company. Not board level. They would have to give 2 weeks' notice. I haven't been in a permanent role with less than 3 months' notice for years and years.

If this is a new job offer I wouldn’t take it on that basis (assuming you are in a position to negotiate or walk away). Two weeks for a senior role is, indeed, laughable.

HR here.... notice periods ‘should’ balance on both sides.

Two weeks sounds odd. Are you sure that is not just during a probation period?
