I’m working too many hours

Georgeoftheinternet · 04/11/2020 17:37

I’ve been given a part time job at 20 hours a week and I’m doing 30.

Any ideas?

  1. the reason why I’m doing so many is because we are so busy
  2. I’m not too sure if my work colleague is actually doing her hours because we can chat for a long time (I will always make this time up)
  3. I’ve had a lot of anxiety recently which has calmed down. I’m much more efficient at my job so i shouldn’t need to work as much
  4. it’s £12ph so not a lot of money for me to justify working as many hours (I’m grateful). 5 I’m looking for a full time job at the moment (well in my head, no applications yet).

Sorry should have proof read.
2) she will chat to me for a long time and we aren’t that close. She has many friends at work.
6) I work from home. No chance of office working

So does that mean you stay an extra hour each time you go to work to get things done, or don't ever take your breaks? How do you end up doing so much?

GingerBreadNurse · 04/11/2020 17:40

What’s the issue? Are you being paid for the over time you’re doing?

lljkk · 04/11/2020 17:41

xpost... so what would happen if you clocked off after your regular hours? Why do you have to chat for so long? Where is your line manager in this picture?

MiniCooperLover · 04/11/2020 17:45

Stop chatting!

Georgeoftheinternet · 04/11/2020 18:04

I don’t get paid extra:L.

Backlog will always happen because there is too much work I took a week of work and the shared inbox was a mess and now I’ve got my usual work that is labour-some to catch up on, as well as all these other tasks they are doing.

Head of department said she worked elsewhere and they coped, so she doesn’t know why we are struggling.

Work colleague (guess job share) has had a lot of holidays recently which means I’ve been struggling. She’s also bought back days.

Bosses boss has suggested we do keep in contact with staff via Teams etc.

I always start and end work before my allocated hours.

Yes I don’t encourage the long chats and i do make up the time. I’m also Billy no mates and it’s only two days a week.

I work part time so we don’t get breaks. I overstay.

What do you want to do about this situation?

unfortunateevents · 04/11/2020 18:14

Why and how are you chatting if you are working from home? If it is via Teams or a messaging service, just ignore it until you are ready to respond, if in person, why do you not say - sorry, I've got lots of work to catch up on, I can't chat any longer?

unfortunateevents · 04/11/2020 18:16

I'm also confused, if the job is part-time, two days a week and you don't get breaks, how can that be 20 hours? Because that seems to be 10 hour days?

Georgeoftheinternet · 04/11/2020 18:57

The chatting isn’t the issue. It’s just to much work.

When I’m not at work I know how much work there is and it plays on my mind.

The head of department has now started a new process where she’s got more work for us to do. So more admin.

I work every day. Co worker works two. She’s also had a lot of time of work. My concern was more that she’s chatting a lot at work, but she’s also worked through her breaks (or so she says). Plus I also think she was hard working in the office so it would still be the same.

Does your manager know you do that many hours? Does it mean you are below the minimum wage?

No of course not!

So you're willing working too much? You just need to do your allocated hours. If you are the. Not completing the work you are supposed to do, then review this with your manager and see what their expectations are, how this looks against the reality and discuss. If you're clocking in early and late then they don't have a real picture of what the work looks like. Are you being expected to do a full time job on 20 hours? Or are you expected to do 20hlurs worth of that job? Or is the job only 20hours worth of work. Those are the questions you need to ask.

Way to much work to do. There is a culture of too much work to do in the department. Thing is, they’ve got more staff now however they also want more things doing. I’ve had to chase suppliers a lot, that takes up a lot of my time etc. What’s the point of discussing with manager - he knows I want a full time job and they are getting another manager. I’m hoping this new manager will help things, but I don’t know because I’m still not able to get everything done.

Just stop doing it.
Do your 20 hours, then stop.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 04/11/2020 19:30

There's no reason for them to give you a full-time job if they can pay you part-time wages for almost full-time work. Do your hours and give you manager a list of things that need to be done that week that you don't have time for.

Georgeoftheinternet · 04/11/2020 20:18

Ok.
I’m worried about being criticised again.
