In a pickle... WWYD?

Ok, so I've recently started a new job within the NHS. I've been in the NHS for a few years but this new job is a step up the ladder (higher band and more money). The people and the work are fine, but the area it's in is so rough. It's in the middle of a really rough council estate, full of crime, gangs hanging around and hassling the staff. I don't feel safe in the are tbh, and having to wait at the local bus stop on the dark nights in winter doesn't appeal to me. I don't drive (health reasons mean I can't).
I've see the exact same job advertised, there's a team who do exactly the same thing and offer the same job, but it's much closer to home and I could walk there. As it's another team but doing exactly the same thing, I suspect all the staff would know each other across both teams so, if I apply for this position nearer to home, the hiring manager might ask why I'm looking to leave current role so soon (only started it recently).
Would it sound flakey to say I don't feel safe in the area where I'm currently working and that it's really rough and crime-ridden? How could I dress that up in a way to sound more professional on the application?

"Closer to home."

It's not unreasonable. How far away is this job from home. Saying you want a job closer to home is completely reasonable.
Although I understand your predicament with starting the job so recently. It's not under the same trust is it? As you could ask to be transferred if so.

Yes, it's with the same Trust. I'm just concerned about looking flakey and unreliable if I'm applying for exactly the same job elsewhere so soon after starting current role!. Wouldn't want them to think I'm messing people about.

Closer to home is actually a really 'goid enough' reason

Ylvamoon · 27/10/2020 18:02

Not flaky at all. If asked just tell them that it's within walking distance to home ... v bus journey to work.

No need to mention area!

You should absolutely ask about transferring in that case.

Like PP said, closer to home is a valid reason!
