Test didn't match instructions

Hi everyone, I recently applied for a job that involved doing an online written exercise. The exercise was basically a mock version of a task you might be asked to do on the job. The instructions I received said that it would test knowledge of a particular legal area, and then general communication skills, strategic and creative thinking. It specifically said you wouldn't need knowledge of any other legal area to do the exercise....I think you can see where this is going.

So, before the test I revise the relevant legal area it mentioned and then when I click through to the exercise it is primarily focused on a totally different legal area. That legal area is highly relevant to the job and I was a bit surprised when the instructions didn't mention it. However, the job ad didn't say knowledge of the area was required so I assumed that they are looking to hire people who show promise and then train them up in that area if needed (this is common for this employer).

Anyway the exercise is done now. I don't think I did brilliantly but equally it could have been worse. At the interview we will discuss the exercise so I'll have an opportunity to correct anything or add things I missed and I've been preparing for that.

My question is should I say anything to them about the fact that the instructions were incorrect? I've been thinking I should email HR to let them know in advance. I don't want to say it in the interview because that feels like giving an excuse. But I definitely would have done better in the exercise had the instructions been correct.

I would email HR to let them know as it could of been a genuine mistake.
