At risk and applying for new job externally - tell new company or not?

I'm in the midst of an interview process (started back in Feb. but was put on pause due to COVID, and just restarted) with a firm I'm keen to join. But the company I currently work for has just announced they're making large-scale redundancies and I've been told my role is at risk. We're now going into a collective consultation period.

Do I tell the company I'm applying to? I'm worried this will make them see me in a negative light - but I'm worried it will also not reflect well on me if I tell them after the fact. I'm likely to find out if I've gotten the new job or not, before I'm told that my current job is gone. But if I'm lucky enough to secure the new position, I'd think it's likely the new company will check references/employment status with the current one. Welcome any advice.

Going through something be dry similar, kicked off this week. You're not redundant until it's official. Also, redundancy - especially in 2020 - has no personal reflection on you.

How long is your consultation and when are you likely to hear about the job?

Personally I wouldn't disclose your job vulnerability because in the worst case they could use it to reduce an offer based on the fact that you're soon to be unemployed

You don't need to tell either of them yet. If you're concerned, put in writing that you they need to tell you before they take up references.

I went through an interview process while at risk of redundancy recently. The interviewer asked me why I was looking to leave, and I said that the industry I was working in had reduced significantly due to covid, and that had limited the opportunities witin my company for progression, and that I was looking for a role which would offer me long term stability and development opportunities. I didn't outright say that my employer was making redundancies, but the interviewer got the gist I think. It was fine, I think a lot of employers are aware that people may be job hunting from a position of potential redundancy at the moment.

I told people as it was directly related to Covid. But I don't think it's a big deal right now as PP have said.

Good luck, I hope you get the redunancy payment and the new jobSmile

Thanks everyone, that's helpful to hear. I will wait on saying anything to the possible new employer. The timing is likely to be that I'd hear about the new job before formally being made redundant by my current employer. Not sure how feasible it would be to get the redundancy payment as well, but one thing at a time - I would be happy just to get the new job frankly, and to get away from the situation at my current company.
