Internal job application

I applied for a job at my company that was advertised externally and have been successful. My current manager says I need to write a letter of resignation, I thought I would just transfer. Do I keep my length of service, which effects things like sick pay entitlement?

I would not write a resignation letter in these circumstances. It should be a transfer, I would expect something from the company confirming new position and any changes to salary etc. But that is all.

When I have moved to a new job internally i have always submitted a letter confirming that I am handing in my notice once I had received my new contract. Our contracts always confirm the continuous service date, so never had a problem.

Yes you are resigning from your current role. Just make sure no gap in service

Really? I have never come across that in all my years in the workforce. I have always worked in multinationals and people are constantly changing roles.
