If someone wanting to work as a childcarer was discovered to have written their own reference and forged the signature of someone fairly important to support it, do you think you should you let the police know about it? I'm not sure if this is a crime or not, and whether the police might be interested in a forged reference given that said person is trying to get a job working with children. What do you think?

Theft Act 1968 - Attenpting to obtain a pecuniary advantage by deception. Forgery would be further classified as deliberate which makes it even worse.

Call the police. It is a criminal act and depending on where you are in the country the police force may/may not jump all over it (depends on how they measure their clear-up rates: this kind of thing is a no-brainer for getting a 'result' on, but some forces might not be interested in following up, as it isn't the most exciting way to spend an afternoon)
