New job

I am hoping to be offered a new job with a direct competitor of where I work currently.

I've been there a long time. Ten years.

Should I tell my employers where I am going?

I have seen in the past others advise where they are going, not always to a competitor but still leaving all the same and then be ignored by senior management. Treated not very nicely if I am honest.

I suppose I am just asking the pros and cons really from anyone who knows about this sort of thing and if anyone has any advice.

In my last workplace if you went to a direct competitor you were paced on gardening leave during your notice period.

Do you mean, when they ask where you're going should you lie?

Lying would probably burn some bridges. Even if you don't anticipate ever returning to work for them you're still likely to have interactions or connections.

Some people can be a bit funny (or complete arseholes) with someone who's working their notice regardless of where they're heading, but at least it's temporary. So I'd make the decision with an eye on the long term not the short term.

People usually ask where you are moving to, I have never known anyone keep it a secret and have never felt the need to do so myself. Many people will be moving to a direct competitor too e.g. I worked in financial services and people moved between banks and insurance companies etc. Hardly anyone was put onto gardening leave.
