Working from home

Let's be honest gang... How many of you actually "work" when you work from home... Is it all loose women and and endless cups of tea or do you actually find yourselves being productive as you would be or more so in the office?

My office never closed but friends who had to work from home with young kids (and friends without kids) would laugh at your post, they struggled trying to work from home plus homeschool their kids. In fact, just last night I called a friend for a chat and she said she couldn't talk as she was putting the kids to bed then logging back on.

SueEllenMishke · 08/09/2020 10:44

I suspect you're being deliberately goady but I'll note .......

What do you think??

SueEllenMishke · 08/09/2020 10:45

*bite not note

Ginfordinner · 08/09/2020 10:50

I'll bite.
It's pretty obvious in my team if someone isn't pulling their weight. The slacker left before he was pushed.

I love my job and want to keep it, so I work.

Egghead68 · 08/09/2020 10:50

As productive as in the office

Oh I swan about, sending approx 1 email per hour, watch all the daytime tv and somehow my boss hasn't noticed 🙄

What a goady post...

seayork2020 · 08/09/2020 10:58

Before the virus I thought no way could I work at home i would be hopeless at it, then the virus happened and although i had tv on in the background I actually got atleast double if not more done because I had no interruptions like I do at work I could actually concentrate at home.

The tv i had on was not intense have to concentrate shows

TW2013 · 08/09/2020 10:59

I've worked from home for 14yrs now, think they would have noticed in that time if I failed to meet deadlines. In fact I am generally submitting work up to a week early. I manage my own timetable so yeah sometimes if I am shattered I will have a quick power nap, but that just increases my efficiency as I can't fully concentrate if I am tired. If I wake up early I can get an hour or two in before the school run. It is great work if you can manage your own time.

Howwilliknow22 · 08/09/2020 11:00

@FranklySonImTheGaffer get off this thread then if that's what you think.

SueEllenMishke · 08/09/2020 11:01

Well you're a delight aren't you OP?

You sound like my friend who thinks all of us that were able to wfh were skiving ....

The reality was I was putting in more hours than ever without any childcare or school.

I've always been incredibly productive at home. It would be pretty obviously pretty quickly if I didn't do my work.

Howwilliknow22 · 08/09/2020 11:01

@TW2013 thank you for a reasonable answer. These are the type of comments I wanted to see not the "deliberately goady" crap.

FoolsAssassin · 08/09/2020 11:02

I think DH’s current boss was a bit worried some would be like that, but it’s going so well and they are all so productive most won’t be returning to the office.

Howwilliknow22 · 08/09/2020 11:02

@SueEllenMishke yes I am a delight, not going to let you or any others bully. Because it is not a goady thread.. I am interested in opinions. Now I've heard yours, I can go to sleep better at night. Thank you.

SueEllenMishke · 08/09/2020 11:07

Who is bullying? I'm not the only person who thought you sounded like you were being goady. It read like you were spoiling for an argument.
Why not just ask a simple question? Why even suggest people wfh are just sat around watching loose women?

Lilybet1980 · 08/09/2020 11:08

Like all things in life you will find two extremes and everything in between.

The ones that used to make me chuckle were the people who were wfh because they were moving house (because that doesn’t involve a full day of manual labour!) or because they had to wait in for their WiFi to be installed (because it’s so easy to work with no WiFi!).

Pre pandemic, if I was wfh it would very much depend on what I had to achieve that day. Some days I would hardly leave my desk and would grab biscuits for lunch. Others I’d achieve more work in less time so I’d make time to go out to the gym or for a run. Fewer distractions sometimes helped. But other times it would take twice as long to get to the answer because I’d have to call round a load of people rather than wander the floor looking for answers.

Howwilliknow22 · 08/09/2020 11:09

Read the whole post.. I asked if people are as productive as they are in the office. You're being a bully because you want an argument. Not going to give you what you want. If you keep responding then it's you that's being goady.. I'm standing up for myself and explaining my post isn't goady. You can't accept that. Then that's your issue isn't it.

OP posts:
Howwilliknow22 · 08/09/2020 11:12

@Lilybet1980 I worked on a big trading floor and was much much easier walking over to go and speak to someone.. I prefer that to email communication!

OP posts:
Lochroy · 08/09/2020 11:13

Well that's a loaded post if ever I saw one. 'Let's be honest gang' and use of quotation marks around work. What's up OP, are you looking for tips on how to skive from home? Shocked to find that most people genuinely have been "working" while you haven't?

AriettyHomily · 08/09/2020 11:14

Bit chippy op.

Today I'm not doing much, yesterday I worked until past midnight so don't feel bad. Nature of my role.

SueEllenMishke · 08/09/2020 11:15

I don't think you understand what bullying is....

The only bullying I can see is you telling people to get off the thread.

I'm a huge advocate for wfh and I'm happy to share my experience both as a manger who tried to implement it in a dept. where it hadn't been embraced before and as someone who worked from home regularly pre-pandemic.

However, nothing gets a regular WFH'ers back up more than the suggestion we all just sit around watching daytime tv and drinking tea.

KeepSmiling89 · 08/09/2020 11:15

Motivation isn't great working from home to be honest but everyone in my team is an autonomous professional and we're all trusted to manage our time when working from home. I recently got a work mobile so I feel I can be more productive now as I can contact clients etc without having to wait until I'm in the office.

I feel guilty about having a slightly longer lunch break or not starting bang on 8.30am but when I asked my team most people have said the same...it's flexible working. Pre-COVID we usually work past our normal hours due to a number of reasons so starting a bit late or finishing a bit early isn't a big deal really. Some of us work through lunch sometimes too.

I feel more motivated and productive in the office as I can print stuff off and have access to all my files and resources but it's about finding a good balance.

Can't stand loose women but enjoy watching Friends with DH at lunch time.

Howwilliknow22 · 08/09/2020 11:16

@Lochroy just get off.

OP posts:
ivfbeenbusy · 08/09/2020 11:17

Agree with @Lilybet1980

I set myself targets of what I need to get done that week - if I blitz it all within 3 days then I'll have a couple of days which are less hectic. Some days just seem to "click" and you are definitely more productive - no gossiping with colleagues, 10 million tea rounds to do etc then other days it can be easy to get distracted by little things like putting the washing out

Howwilliknow22 · 08/09/2020 11:20

Thank you @KeepSmiling89 I think I struggle with motivation also. In a big team especially.. I sat opposite my manager as well and now it's annoying having to call or zoom every hour. I do try and do the household stuff like washing etc before I log on or in lunch but its never easy x
