Are most previous officer workers now WFH using laptops as only screen & over wifi?

I think this might be true, else there wouldn't be so much gushing about cafe working.

Is anyone using docking station at home, multiple screens (how many?), or need ethernet cable for WFH ... is anyone relying on tethered wifi on a phone?

We have 2 x 20m Ethernet cables trailing around an odd shaped house. Will get round to properly wiring them in the loft space at some point.

And I brought my work monitor home as a second screen.

PontiacBandit · 07/09/2020 11:10

I'm working from the kitchen table but brought home my PC and 2 screens from work. I had to buy an office chair as our dining chairs were not comfortable for 8 hours a day.
I have a laptop but don't like it for long periods and I need the 2 monitor set up for a lot of my work.

We have a proper desk and chair (x2) with two screens on, with a proper mouse and keyboard (x2).

Mostly there’s only one person working at a time, but occasionally we work at the same time. Though tbh it’s very rare and I’d rather sit with my laptop on the sofa with the WiFi than suffer through sitting next to DH. We worked in the same office /team for 10 years, so used to working together but I don’t know how I haven’t murdered him yet Angry

Super fast broadband here, supporting two adults wfh, one post grad student using end note etc and one undergrad student gaming rather than getting on with studying before he goes back.

Both dh and I vpn into our work desktops - and that handles my very large Excel and other files fine. We both have laptop screen and a secondary screen (supplied by work) and wireless mouse and keyboard (self supplied).

And each week we swap who gets the nice study and who gets the dining table Grin

I've been kitting out a home office bit by bit over the years, and we did a loft conversion last year to give me more space and ran ethernet cables to it. So when WFH hit I already had a good setup with dual screens +laptop, good headset, camera etc. Now it's full time WFH I invested in a better chair and got a desk mic as well (better for Zoom drinks than a headset!). All funded by me but mostly bought for my own convenience when I was choosing to WFH so I don't begrudge it.

Just buy the ones you can plug into your mains. Much safer than trailing wires around the house.

My BT wifi is unpredictable. How do I hardwire ethernet cables to more than one device from a BT 'hub'?
Ideally, I'd like my DCs' pcs hardwired too as they have lag on their decent gaming pcs.

Pp spoke about ports in every room.

Ginfordinner · 08/09/2020 08:03

This is what you need. You can buy as many as you need and just plug them into the mains and into your computer.

I have a time share arrangement with the docking station, screen and foot rest, with DH.
The rest of the time (less than half the week after days off are taken into account) I have a proper desk chair, laptop stand, keyboard and mouse at the dining table.
I'm not sure how good the laptop screen is compared to the separate screen but the rest of it is probably OK.

drspouse · 08/09/2020 08:10

(We have a Wi-Fi booster in the dining room and fast Wi-Fi.)

IIRC you can claim tax rebate on equipment you purchase solely for work, and for which you aren't reimbursed.

I've worked from home for several years and use just a normal laptop with no extra screen.

No back ache at all. In fact I used to get back ache in the office but not at home, I think because I move around more (change seats for lunch, do chores in between work, etc).

I work from different places around the house - sometimes at a desk in my study, sometimes curled up on the sofa, sometimes at the kitchen table and I think that helps too.

I use wi-fi.

Before COVID I would sometimes work from a local cafe one day a week and will likely go back to that in the future (also a co-working space in my local city).

At the cafe I also use wi-fi. I only tether via my phone if the internet is down or I'm somewhere that doesn't have WiFi.

wheresmymojo · 08/09/2020 08:22

I'm self employed BTW so it's not down to my employer.

When I was employed I had two screens in the office but never used them and just used my laptop as I prefer working that way.

I work with large excel spreadsheets which I often need to look at side by side, Outlook, Teams, a huge database, the company intranet and supplier websites. Flicking between all of those on a small laptop screen is slow and inefficient for me.
AriettyHomily · 08/09/2020 09:12

Work sent me two monitors and I sit I the kids old Tripp trap chairs which are really comfortable. I use the home WiFi don't need to tether oh phone.

FieldOverFence · 08/09/2020 09:16

We were provided screen, keyboards, mouse, headset for WFH, plus a furniture stipend, and a financial contribution to monthly internet costs ... they've basically set us up to stay WFH for the medium-long term

disorganisedsecretsquirrel · 08/09/2020 10:41

Civil service here.
Screens, home work station assessment, desk, chair . Printer.
Can't fault them. All delivered to me within two weeks of lockdown..

CactusForever · 08/09/2020 11:40

Yes, I'm pissed off to be working on my own personal laptop w no screen, keyboard or mouse.

TooManyDogsandChildren · 08/09/2020 11:57

Work laptop at the kitchen table with a kitchen chair. Very good home wifi has worked perfectly throughout even with the teens online at the sometime. Work provide a VPN.

I am a bit of a roamer anyway so when I get bored with working at the table I will transfer to the sofa or bedroom or the garden. Better than being stuck at a desk all day at work.

I sometimes need to look at complex documents on two screens but I just use my home laptop as a second screen then. Works fine.

Lexilooo · 08/09/2020 12:06

My employer has provided all employees who were working from home with a second screen, keyboard, mouse, headset and chair. Our laptops use wifi or ethernet depending upon your set up at home. Some have the option to use mobile tethering too.

All post is scanned on daily.

We are working as efficiently as we would be in the office with a reduced risk of needing to quarantine.

I've always wfh. Have multiple screens, WiFi phone etc. When there's issues with electricity or WiFi I connect via work mobile. Have a full office at home, appropriate equipment and desk etc.
