NHS Scotland Interview

NC for this as a bit outing.

I have an interview coming up for a Band 5 Staff Nurse in the Emergency Department. Any ideas on the latest hot topics and buzz words in that area?

I have two years of acute medical admissions experience and two of acute surgical admissions experience so hoping that will help! Unfortunately I don’t know any ED staff well enough to ask for help so I’m hoping MN can work it’s magic for me

Remobilisation plans increasingly talking about shifting urgent care model to be more of 'scheduled unscheduled' - role of NHS24, local flow navigation centres utilising remote technology where appropriate. Don't have people randomly pitching up at ED.

Note - doesn't include emergency care.

I'm not a clinician so can't comment on clinical aspects but some buzz words there for you Smile

Thanks @NeonK that’s exactly the kind of stuff I was looking for!

Changes that may have arisen on the back of COVID at your hospital and your awareness of them.

I will continue to have a think...

Look at the NHS board values and have a stock of answers for how you meer each of those values, practical examples of things you have done. Person centred care is a biggie.

What are the biggest challenges facing the NHS at the moment?

crosser62 · 29/08/2020 15:54

The usual visions & values of that Trust.
Possibly think of examples when you have been very very stressed at work & how you managed it?
How you prioritise workload.
Do you have ILS, ALS? Are you willing to undertake this training?
Possibly infection prevention question.
Possibly a question about the most recent research you have read & how it’s influenced your practice.

FlorenceNightshade · 29/08/2020 15:59

@Thegirlwithyyy I put a lot of MH stuff in my application! I definitely believe it’s essential to holistic care. Thank you for your thoughts

@Invisimamma they’ve changed the application form to include essay type questions on the aims and values! Was definitely not expecting that but obviously I did enough to get to the next stage.

I suppose the biggest challenges are life after corona, patient expectations and lack of money!

@crosser62 the training is part of why I’m looking to leave. In my few years in surgical I’ve only done ILS once. No BLS, no manual handling no options for a module at uni nothing. I definitely want to learn new skills

OP posts:
crosser62 · 29/08/2020 16:07

That’s a good reason to leave. They are not investing in you are they.
BLS is a mandatory requirement, that’s appalling that they haven’t provided this for you.

crosser62 · 29/08/2020 16:11

EOL question, how’s it implemented in emergency medicine.
Are you a link nurse for anything? If so, how do you feed that knowledge/ evidenced based research back to colleagues?
Do you know anything about escalation policies for aggressive patients/relatives?

FlorenceNightshade · 29/08/2020 16:11

@crosser62 appalling but not surprising! It’s an actual joke how little training is offered and that was before Covid so they can’t even use that as an excuse

OP posts:
crosser62 · 29/08/2020 18:53

Maybe at your Trust but that really isn’t true of others it has to be said.
Hopefully you will get more when you get your new job...and you will get your new job Smile

FlorenceNightshade · 29/08/2020 19:07

@crosser62 yeah mine has a really bad rep for keeping training and cpd a low priority. Thanks for the positive vibes

So I had my interview the other day and I’ve just been told (over the phone) that I’m on hold. Basically I’m not the first choice and they are hoping HR will approve them replacing departing staff with me but they are waiting to hear? I won’t need reinterviewed if they can pull it off within 3 months apparently

Never heard anything like this before in the NHS is that a thing?
