Would you pay to have your CV done professionally...?

Reed, the employment agency have a link to get a free review of your CV which I've just had.

The chap at the other end of the phone made some salient points but he also said that the company could re-jig it for £129 - you know, so that it sells your skills more to your desired market.

I said "I don't think so as I'm handing my notice in tomorrow" but having thought about it, it might be an idea because I, like many people, am rubbish at selling myself.

As anyone paid to have their CV done, and what was the outcome?

I personally would but there are people who will do it a lot cheaper than that. Many freelance individuals.
Really depends on you core comptences and if writing CV's is one of them you will be fine.

I reckon you would be able to get it done for about £30 or so and merely but giving them your history, what you are good at etc and they will "big it up" for you.

oatcake · 04/10/2007 19:04

£30?! That's a huge difference!

No, I'd come on here and ask flowerybeanbag to help me.

And to be serious, £130 is a rip off.

oatcake · 04/10/2007 19:08

Do you do that sort of thing? ie. rejig CVs?

Can you help me for cheaper than £129?

bookwormmum · 04/10/2007 19:16

I wouldn't pay £129 for that. Surely most companies can tell when a CV is professionally written?

morningpaper · 04/10/2007 19:16

Yes you should come on MN and ask us

we are much cleverer and fREE

flowerybeanbag · 04/10/2007 19:17

Email me flowery dot beanbag @ ntlworld dot com

Happy to have a look and give you a few pointers for free, I'm an HR Consultant.

flowerybeanbag · 04/10/2007 19:18

And yes bookworm is right, it stands out a mile if it's too 'done'.

newgirl · 04/10/2007 19:26

shop around first - i think there are agencies that do it - maybe even in yellow pages!

oatcake · 04/10/2007 20:19

oooh, thank you FBB. I will shoot it off to you now as I'm working tomorrow and the weekend!

I'll pay you with a reflexology treatment if you live near KT12!

got it, thanks, will try and have a look today if I can, as I'm away tomorrow and Sunday so otherwise it will be next week.

Not near KT12 I'm afraid, but should I be passing through you may hear from me!

oatcake sorry haven't had a chance today, DS being a handful, so will give it a go Sunday afternoon if I can.

Have a good weekend.

lurkylou · 05/10/2007 18:54

Don't pay £129 ........... not worth it!!!

tribpot · 05/10/2007 18:56

Blimey, I used to run a side-line in doing this for my friends, the cost was one bottle of red wine. Admittedly we were in Sweden but even there a bottle of wine doesn't cost £130!

Def use MN as a resource, FBB sounds like a good bet too! I'm happy to take a look but my field is IT so I can spin a good yarn about that but less good on other fields.

Exactly Flowerybeanbag! You can ask me too - I did loads of recruitment pre DD. Will be more than happy to help. The thing is if someone else writes it completely you won't know it top to bottom and some interviewers will be checking fine details to ensure you have not lied on it and it could trip you up.

You obviously can use a PC so no need to pay someone else to type it, just get it proof read. I once sent my own CV out saying I was a Shit Leader rather than Shift Leader I got the job though!

flowerybeanbag · 05/10/2007 19:04

rofl rofl at 'shit leader', that's priceless!

I suggest the person doing the shortlisting was a s&%t proof reader.

tribpot · 05/10/2007 19:06

LMAO at shit leader. My friend got a CV yesterday for someone who claimed to be very proficient at MS Outlook. You can send emails? What do you want, a medal?! It's like saying you can use the Calculator.

oatcake · 06/10/2007 15:44

Sh*t leader! Priceless!

I can proofread if anyone needs anything proofread - although when it comes to my CV, I'll ask someone else to do it just in case I refer to sh*twork instead of shiftwork which is what I currently do!
