NHS fixed term pension

I have a 12 month fixed term contract with the NHS, band three.
I don’t see myself working in this role for longer than a few years.
Is it worth paying into the pension or should I opt out?

Hi - I am also in the NHS and pay into the pension scheme. As you are probably aware, the NHS pension scheme, is more enhanced than a lot of other schemes and I would normally highly recommend to pay in.

However, your fixed term contract makes a difference and unless you decide to remain in the NHS for an extended period of time it may not be of much value to sacrifice your salary.

Think carefully though, I was originally employed as a B3 by the NHS on a temporary contact but have progressed my way up and am now several bands higher with a permanent position (8 years so far). I paid in right from the start.

Don’t the NHS contribute A fair old whack to the pension? Is it salary sacrifice? Can you take it out as a lump sum when you retire or does it have to be paid as an annual/monthly amount?

I’m hoping to be made redundant in the next 12 months, I’m 54, I’d love to do my last five years in the NHS, pension and all.
