Would you apply at a Company that previously rescinded a job offer?

My job of 6 years was made redundant back in October last year. I took a few months off to care for a family member and started applying in January. I managed to land two final round interviews scheduled within a week of each other. At the time I wanted the job at Company B more than Company A because the commute was better, it was a bigger company and the overall package (better salary & benefits).

I had the final interview with Company A first and they verbally offered me the job on the condition that I cancel my final round interview with company B - in hindsight I wish I hadn’t told them when they asked, I was just being honest.

I told the recruitment agency I needed to think it over because of the reasons mentioned above. The agent asked if I would accept if they matched the salary at the other Company. After careful consideration I said yes but would need the offer in writing before cancelling my other interview.

Later that day I received a hostile call directly from Company A’s HR recruiter saying that they would not increase the salary and that I was lucky to be offered a Job as I’d been redundant & unemployed for 5 months I should be grateful to get a job offer. She said it was unprofessional of me to ask for a higher salary than what I was submitted for. I was shocked but I didn’t want to make things worse and explained that it wasn’t all about the money. She demanded an answer so I accepted it in a panic and asked for it in writing even though I felt this was already a red flag, I felt like I was being bullied into accepting the role. Has anyone else experienced anything similar before?

I told the recruitment agent that I was shocked & concerned about the way their HR spoke to me. He said he would discuss it with them and of course the HR recruiter denied ever saying what she said. This was sorted eventually, so I thought. They demanded me again to cancel my other interview which I agreed to providing they send me the offer in writing which they promised they would do. I naively believed them and cancelled the interview with Company B…something I regret to this day!

A few days later still no job offer in writing and then Company A emailed me and rescinded the job offer saying they didn’t think the role was right for me and that they tried to call me several times the day before. I was driving and at the hospital when they called me twice so couldn’t pick up which I tried to explain to them. They said that I was unresponsive, that salary was obviously an issue for me and that they were concerned. I tried to call and email them back but they ignored me. To this day I still don’t understand what I did wrong, I thought salary negotiations are allowed during the interview/job offer process?

Then Covid happened. I’m still jobless and it’s been hard so feeling rather desperate now. The job market is bad out there and so many people are unemployed too. I saw another job posted by Company A earlier this week, part of me came close to applying for it because there are no jobs out there. Do you think I’m mad and would you do it? Anyone from HR who can advise if they've employed anyone they've cancelled a job offer before? I know I'm probably just wasting my time and I wouldn’t normally think about doing something like this but these are crazy times we live in. I clearly need help Sad

No, I wouldn’t. I don’t work in HR. One word - self respect. The way they behaved suggests they were worried that you would get the job at company b and they would get into a bidding war to secure you as an employee. Seriously, next time, keep your cards close to your chest and put yourself first. Companies won’t hesitate to put the company first.

No don’t apply.

  1. They are clearly a terrible company and treat people appallingly.
  1. They’re not going to employ you anyway.

I would. Sounds to me like the hr person acted unprofessionally and then got themselves in a muddle. Doesn't mean the whole organisation is like that. Can you do a direct application bypassing any agency (and ideally hr)? You might be more attractive without a recruitment fee. Of course if an agency have told you about the role go through them - it generally doesn't stop a fee being due if they have introduced the job to you and it causes lots of ill feeling.

Better to have a job in my view than decide not to apply for one "on principe".

And next time don't tell anyone about other job offers!!! The agency will have used that fact to wind up company A to making a quicker decision. I suspect hr lady did something outside of protocol and then got bollocked by someone else leading to withdrawal of offer.

Have you considered getting back in touch with Company B? If you know the hiring manager’s name/email (if not try and find out) then drop them your cv and a cover letter asking them if they have a similar role to the one you applied for previously?

Regarding company A, normally I’d not consider it after the way they treated you, but that’s just their HR dept. I’d consider the role if it was suitable and decent money, but play hardball with any negotiations (you’ve nothing to lose!).

Good luck either way!

No, they behaved unprofessionally on several counts during your first interaction with them and they will definitely do so again.

I've never heard of a job offer being rescinded unless references came back unfavourably or the general company situation changed (e.g. sudden contract loss meant certain jobs were no longer required). It sounds like you spoke to a really junior / inexperienced HR person but, nonetheless, the company employed them and clearly hasn't provided them with appropriate training / supervision, so their behaviour does speak to the company as a whole.

Agree with DoubleDessert - is there any way of getting back in touch with Company B?

Cordial11 · 17/08/2020 11:37

Wow they sound terrible. I wouldn't want to work for them.

I was pushed to accept a job once and it wasn't my preference, I was out of work and they demanded to know by the end of day. I said yes as I needed a job. When I called to pull out before starting the manager showed his true colours again and sort of threatened me! Shock so glad I never ended up there.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 17/08/2020 11:57

It would sour the relationship for me permanently.. if this is what they are like with someone they are trying to woo and persuade to join the company what the hell would they be like with you once you're working there. I use the word 'hell' because that's what it sounds like it would be like.

PermaStress · 17/08/2020 12:00

I wouldn't touch company A with a bargepole .... BUT I realise I say that from the comfort of one who is employed.

MissTediousGirl · 17/08/2020 17:57

I came into this thread all ready to say avoid them at all costs but having read your post: 1. a job is a job - this might not be the dream company, but getting back into any employment would be good for both your bank balance and c.v. and 2. Seems like you only had negative interactions with the HR person. He/she might just be a truly awful person who the rest of the company can't stand either and actually the company might not be a bad place to work. They might not even still be there now - doesn't sound like the behaviour of someone who would stay in their post for long! I'd prob go for it. Good luck either way.

Agreed. And also it's easier to get a job if you are already employed. Keep looking and be prepared to ditch Company A as soon as something better comes up. If anybody queries why you were there for such a short time you can waffle something about Covid / strange times.

FannieMae84 · 19/08/2020 09:59

i wouldn't, no. i'd also make damn sure to mention it on a glassdoor review/indeed.com or other job search websites, making sure any statement i made was legally factual.

i don't think, owing to the experience at that company, you have a hope in hell of getting a job there, or staying, it's a soured relationship already. in fact you could find yourself going to 1 round of interview, the interviewer liking you, then the HR person gets wind of it, and they decline you anyway, because it's a small world and i've met lots of petty power plays like this even in large, global organisations.

i think you are better looking elsewhere OP - i really don't think you're going to get a job with that place for years, even if you were truly desperate.

good luck in your job search.

Hello all, thanks so much for your replies.

I’ve decided not to pursue them anymore. Honestly I don’t know why I even considered it especially as I have already tried to reach out directly to the hiring manager before & she ignored me.

@DoubleDessertPlease I have contacted Company B but they said they don’t have any openings and will keep me in mind if something does. The Recruiter there still remembers me which was nice.

@FannieMae84 I did consider putting a negative review on Glassdoor for them but they will only deny it & it won’t stop people from wanting to work for them. Also I was sad enough to contact the hiring manager after they rescinded the offer to try and salvage it as I thought she was lovely & would have been nice to work with her so it would just contradict the review. I thought their HR Recruiter was a nasty piece of work but everyone else I met seemed nice at the time. I have learnt my lesson & will not disclose any future interviews going forward.

I have applied to a few more jobs today and have already heard back from one regarding an interview so onwards and upwards hey! Thanks again all 😃
