Can anyone explain to me in simple words how I sort out paying tax for freelance work?

I don't know why but anything to do with tax seems to make my brain switch off! I'm working 4 days a week as an employee but am also doing occasional freelance work just for a bit of extra money when I need it. Do I count as being self-employed (even though I am employed by someone else as my main job)? And what do I need to do???

Help!!

yes. you need to tell your local inland revenue office you are freelance (you need to do this within a certain time - I think it's within 2 months of starting work or you get fined).

they'll give you the forms and they should be able to tell you when to file your tax return. it's not terribly hard, but I think you should probably get an accountant - he or she will also be able to advise you.

YOur situation is very similar to my DH. He got an accountant to do his tax return the first year and then he's followed what they did every year since. Saved himself £100 a year too.
