Hand in notice only when formal offer received?

I was offered a new job (verbally, followed up by some email correspondence about salary and references) about 10 days ago and now I'm waiting for my formal offer and contract.

I really do need these before handing my notice in, don't I? I have a meeting with my LM today where it's going to be hard to keep quiet...

@devildeepbluesea

I've absolutely never had a contract before I've started work and I work in HR!

However I would wait for a formal email offer.

You're brave or mad.

No way I'd terminate one contract without another signed. Surely if nothings signed you have no formal agreement on your terms and conditions, the most important one being what they are going to pay you.

Unconditional offer. Contract can wait.

@Mummysgonetobed

Employers have to issue contracts within 8 weeks of start date, I’m in HR and we don’t issue contracts pre start, just an offer letter setting out main terms of employment.
Never had that happen in 30 years. I've always told a new employer I won't do a thing until I've signed the contract and they confirm they have it. That's both public and private sector.

It's never been an issue.

Well nothing from new organisation so I had to pretend to ask for help in compiling a report Grin

Fingers crossed for tomorrow. I applied for this job in mid March so it's been a long wait!

I will wait until I get a letter though. Have been scared by the stories here...

So my formal offer arrived today (yay) but my manager isn't available to meet until Friday afternoon. Feel like such a fraud promising to take on work I know I won't be around for...

Congrats Op. You can hand in your notice without meeting with your line manager - just submit your resignation in writing via email to your manager (& copy to HR if you want to be thorough).

BackwardsGoing · 05/08/2020 22:04

@InvisibleWomenMustBeRead I know, but I've been working for her for 8 years so it seems a bit rude just to send her an email.

The extra couple of days won't make a huge difference and I want to negotiate a shorter notice period in any case.

In this environment? Don't take the slightest whisper of a chance.

motherofawhirlwind · 05/08/2020 23:21

Amazed anyone in HR would resign before they got a contract - surely we've all seen offers being retracted and the carnage that can cause.

I (or more accurately one of the team) send a full offer letter and contract out same day as the verbal offer, by email. Often within the hour. It's really not hard....
