Sick line query

Hi everyone. I really sadly lost my Baby just before 22 weeks just over a month ago. I was signed off for 6 weeks and this is my last week and it really hasn't been enough time for me to feel strong enough to return to work.
I will speak to the gp about getting it extended but wondered what is the etiquette with this. I've never been off on a sick line in my life. It runs out next Monday so do I let my manager know at the end of the week I'll speak to the gp about extending it?

Most organisations will be kind and supportive of anyone in this situation if you are signed off sick.

I've supported 2 team members in similar situations and helped support them back into work when they felt ready.

Personally I went back before I felt ready, because I needed the distraction and didn't want to be home alone with an empty crib. I was a bit of a wreck but work supported me in being there until I was stronger.

Be gentle with yourself, I'm afraid grief doesn't go away but you learn to cope with it more over time x

Hi. I firstly want to say I am really sorry for your loss.
Secondly, I suffered a mc in December (although not as far along as you) but like you it was the first time i had ever been signed off work before, i had only ever had a day or two off previously.
All doctors are different, but with mine I was able to just call and get the sick note extended and then I went to pick up the new note. I personally didnt have to show the notes to work, but you should probably keep them somewhere safe just in case.
If you get on well with your manager, I think it may be a good idea to give them a heads up that you will probably be signed off longer by sending a text or email but honestly I think they will be very understanding considering the circumstances.
At the my time, I was able to bypass my male line manager and go to his female manager instead as it felt more comfortable.
In total, i had 4 weeks off, returned to work for about 6 weeks and then was signed off for another 3 or 4 weeks. The day i returned was when WFH started so I havent actually been in the office since Feb to pick up my computers.
Definitely take as much time off as you need, it is counted as pregnancy related so it cant be counted against you. Some people like going back into work as they prefer the routine and find it helps them, but with me it felt like things were going back to "normal" too quick and I didnt like it.
