Nurse career change ideas

Hi, just wondering if there are any nurses/ ex nurses on here that had a career change! I now have another little one on the way so will have 2 children, so not only have my priorities changed since starting my nursing, but I also need more money! For the amount of stress and responsibility I have in my role, it's just not worth it! Open to all sorts of ideas, but I just don't see myself as a nurse long term. Also, I've read similar threads and a lot of people say "you don't go into nursing for the money" and "why did you do a nursing degree then" and the fact is nursing is so so hard, it's gruelling and thankless at times and like other professions, I just need a change for my own sanity.

Have a look at pharmaceutical and medical device sales, marketing, training roles - there are jobs all over the country, highly paid -and lots of ex-HCPs.There is some evening/weekend work, some travel and can be stressful - but much less so than life/death nursing.

The other half works in pharma with lots of ex nurses. Plenty of 40-50k jobs but difficult to do Monday to Friday 9-5, and very much more difficult to top up with bank or agency shifts.

You might struggle to match the income and flexibility of agency nursing if you have particularly in demand skills.

We employ nurses where I work, we have roles for Disability Assessors working on PIP for the DWP. Currently they are working from home, but we don't know if eventually we will have to complete face to face assessments again. But the hours are 9 - 5 and we have some people who work 3 days per week rather than 5. Salaries are similar, but it definitely offers a better work/life balance if we have little ones.

As I'm sure you know, nursing is diverse. Many nursing jobs are not shift work, and bank/agency rates can be better than permanent employment.
School nursing? Community?
Are you adult or paeds trained?

Grace02 · 21/07/2020 16:15

I'm an adult trained nurse, and after todays announcement of no pay rise I'm definitely leaving this profession. I've always fancied teaching, ever since I'd left school and I did work with teenagers for a while delivering level 3 healthcare qualifications. Has anyone made the transition into teaching at a later time in their life? I know the profession comes with it's own issues, but I can't stand nursing anymore and as a public facing role, it's not fair to continue in a job I don't enjoy.

I'm following this thread as I'm thinking the same.
Currently adult nurse, qualified 7 years - losing my heart for the profession and would like to try something different too. It's so difficult and awful at times

If you fancy teaching how about lecturing nursing students?

AlfieGeorge40 · 21/07/2020 16:43

Have you considered transferring into primary care? much more choice of working patterns either at general practice level or evening/weekends in extended access? They are always short of nurses as most people jump straight into the acute settings following completion of their degrees, as such primary care offer lots of development opportunities to attract you ie: training to prescribe/become an advanced nurse practitioner which is a higher salary

I don’t think transferring to teaching will give you much reduction in your level of stress tbh although I suppose it depends on the age you teach.

I’m a nurse in Outpatients and my job is pretty much no stress, always get my breaks and leave on time. There are plenty of other nursing roles out there with better work-life balance and progression opportunities if you look into it.
