Saturday jobs

Do Saturday jobs still exist? My 16 year old boy has announced he would like a part time job over the summer and to last him throughout his A-level, even uni, years. But, obviously, I don’t want him doing too many hours. Saturday or even a couple of nights a week would be great. He’s a bright boy and very sociable 😃.

Are jobs like this advertised or do people just ask around? Sorry, I have no idea as I’ve always worked in the NHS.

Any ideas?

My DS worked for WH Smiths from 16 to 18 just doing 4 hours on a Saturday whilst he did his A levels. They do pay the minimum wage and very little chance of overtime but it was great experience for him. When he started at Uni (he commutes from home) he got a job in Tesco which pays double the hourly rate that he got at WHS and has hours to fit around Uni and overtime is available.

I'm not sure how much COVID will have affected this though. Lots of places cutting staff so Saturday jobs may be hard to come by. Certainly worth trying supermarkets though.

One of his friends has just started at Sainsbury’s so I may ask in there. He really needs the experience and I think it’ll be good for his development/career. I’ll have a good look around at the weekend.

If he wants the job why are you doing the looking?

Mum asking about a job for their child doesn't go across well with employers

Help with application forms and personal statements etc is fine but he should be the one out looking and asking in stores

bananallamas · 03/07/2020 07:01

OP in the nicest way possible if you want to help him build his life skills, then let him go and find and apply for the jobs. At 16 you don't need your mum going into Sainsbury's for you to ask if they've got any jobs and for the application form etc. It makes him seem like he's got no independence or confidence which I'm sure isn't the case.

It's a really valuable skill to be able to go and enquire about jobs, ask how to apply, complete the form, attend interview.

Cross post with op, thought the same thing.

You sounds lovely OP and by all means help with the looking, but certainly don't do any asking or applying, DS will need to do that!

Hope he finds something!

I worked at Clarks as a sat job. The way I found them was to go into all the shops and ask.

Why are you making unfounded assumptions? Where does the OP say she's planning on job hunting/applying for him or going asking employers about a job?

She isn't. She's asking advice on a parenting forum as to whether p/t jobs still exist.

Supermarkets definitely. One good option I know is the stationers Rymans. Kids with Saturday jobs could transfer between branches in different places for uni terms and holidays. Flexible hours to fit round lectures etc.

Ummm in the second post the OP made where she said I’ll have a good look around at the weekend.

BloomingGoodTea · 03/07/2020 20:28

I just want to see what is out there but, yes, I will make him apply and do the interview. I can’t hold his hand forever!

We’re working on a CV - yes, I’m helping with that. It’s only basic, obviously, but he is coming up with some good ideas as to what to put in it.

Good point about making him doing the asking etc. I’ll do that!!
Thanks for the suggestions. We do have McDonalds close by and a Ryman’s. My student job was in a leisure centre, which I carried on with until the end of university (helped me get through without a student loan) so I have no idea what goes on in the retail world with regards 16 year olds.
