Dependent leave

I'm just weighing up all my options and trying gather facts before I talk to my employer.
I have been employed as a support worker since August 2016 (have worked at the same company since 2012 but have a two year break 2014-2016 for maternity/childcare)

It's looking more likely that I will have to leave my job due to childcare (ex lives with his mother who is shielding/terrified of the virus, won't have 5 year old dd there)
I really don't want to leave my job, especially as how I don't know if this will be permanent and would hope it will only be an issue for a couple more months until dd can be looked after by her dad again.
How long is usual to go on dependent leave, if that's even a thing? Or is there any other way I can be on 'leave' but still keep my position open, so I can return in the future when childcare (hopefully) won't be an issue? I'm sure it's mostly down to the employer but I just need a rough idea.
Thank you and I hope that makes sense.

Hi, if you google 'unpaid parental leave' you should find info on the gov.uk website. I think you're legally allowed to take 4 weeks a year per child but employers can also use their discretion so definitely speak to your employer as they may be able to offer you more.
Good luck with whatever happens - this whole situation is so difficult with childcare!

Thanks so much roobine 😊 yes it is difficult!
I feel like I'm at a stage of acceptance now. I've tried so hard these past few months. Had my ex living with us since start of lock down but its just not feasible long term.
I rang head office earlier (line manager hasn't been much help and I'm pissed off with her now so i went above her head, make of that what you will) and someone is getting back to me later. She said something about a 'career break' being a possibility and is gpingbto speaks to the 'big boss' about it. I'm a long standing member of staff so it's within their interests to keep me if at all possible.
I rang the 'ginger bread' oan parent helpline too and she was amazing. I feel much better now I have an action plan.
I really love my job and hope to go back soon. But I can't right now so there's not much else to be done.
