COmpany cars

Dh has a company car. He left his job yesterday and starts his new one next week. The outgoing employers have made no effort to contact him to arrange collection of the car. Are we to assume dh and I are no longer insured to drive it and who is responsible if it gets damaged, say by a passing youth or hit by another car?

Don't you have to organise your own insurance? Sorry I have no experience of this.

no the company insured us

how did he 'leave' his job?

I would contact them on Monday. Also, have a chat with dh and see if you want to buy it. They may offer it to you at market value and you'll need to decide whether you want it or not!

very unlikely that HR/the company have been that on the ball otherwise they would have collected/asked for the car. I'd just call them on Monday.

he was offerd another job so handed his notice in. We dont want the car as he will be getting new company car with new job. Could really do with using it but dont want to be caught unawares

What normally happens? At our workplace you hand over the keys on your last day and leave the car there.

I wouldnt take the risk in driving it, their policy is probably limited to employees. Should it get damaged whilst parked it should still be covered.

Don't drive it, you probably would be insured if you had his employer's permission to drive it but as he has left the organisation, don't assume you have that. Sounds as though they have overlooked it. Get DH to give them a ring on Monday and get them to pick it up.

If it gets hit by a passing car or whatever, the employers insurance will cover it, don't worry about that, but I wouldn't drive it, if you or DH had an accident there could be a problem.

DH's company went bust a couple of years ago. We just kept the car locked up on the street until they sent someone to collect it - it's their responsibility

I have a company car and the fleet insurance policy states employees and those with permission are insured to drive it. If he isn't an employee anymore and doesn't have specific permission (e.g. as my OH does with mine) then I would imagine he wouldn't be insured. That's just a guess though!
