Anyone work at Aldi?

Hi.

I am reluctantantly applying for other jobs as my employer has become very vague and distant whilst I've been placed on furlough and has admitted he cant promise job security. So I have to be sensible and look for alternatives.

I only say reluctant because my job fitted perfectly around my 5 year old and being a single parent it has helped me massively working around his school day, having bank holidays off, 2 weeks shut down at xmas, no weekend working and flexibility with school events.

However I am terrified about being made unemployed and I am being realistic in knowing I wont find a job that fits so perfectly for us.

I have applied to Aldi and have got through to the next stage, the video application. What does this involve?

Also I dont want to waste any ones time applying and it not being suitable. I have absolutely no objection to working evenings and weekends etc, however my childcare is pretty much zero unless I start paying for it. It's not weekends so much as my parents are free to help then, but are you able to state a preferred shift? So for example weekday mornings and afternoons would be better so i'd prefer working these shifts mostly. I promise I have no issues doing different shifts but it I was mostly given evenings and weekends it would be pointless me applying.

TIA x

It’s a good hourly rate, but you work hard for it and you don’t get many benefits - minimum pension etc.

I’d try the other supermarkets

Ok thanks for the tip. I havent worked in retail for 15 years but being without a job is really worrying me. Especially when I feel like my boss isnt responding to me

I worked at ALDI fifteen years ago and left after three months. I think they have more staff in the stores now but back then we used to run around like headless chickens

I remember being told I wasn't going fast enough on the til but when the customer is slow putting items in to the trolley what can you do?

The pay is good because they expect you to do the work of 2-3 ppl. When you go to Tesco etc and see somebody taking there time putting a full cage of items on to the shelves at ALDI you had a set time to do that in

Try Sainsbury's, Tesco etc instead

I worked at Aldi a few years back, as I recall my manager tended to give everyone one weekend on, one weekend off but there were a few mothers who didn't do weekends, so they may be willing to accommodate you.

They will work you hard though, your till speed is monitored and you are expected to scan 1200 items an hour and they also time how long it takes you to unload a crate, accuracy on paperwork etc.

Also at the time they only gave people 25 hours a week, so although the pay was good you weren't actually making as much money as someone working a standard week at another supermarket.

Waitrose is much better although the customers can be sniffy and they really focus on getting the right sort of person, online tests, group assessments, then 1-1 interview plus medical.

Aldi always seems to me to be like a jumble sale. Their food isnt great either, very hit and miss but they do have their followers.

Waitrose are always asking people for overtime (at the same rate as normal hours) often at short notice or you get a text the night before or even before your shift starts asking whether you can come in earlier!

Thanks all worth noting. I have read not so great things about Aldi but its a case of looking for anything to cover myself
