Redundancy is this legal?

So my team of 8 were told yesterday we are being halved as part of a company wide redundancy. We have until Tuesday to apply for voluntary package they've offered. We were then shown the proposed structure of the halved team. But we haven't been told what process will be used to allocate people to the jobs left,

My question I guess is does this sound like the normal approach to redundancy? If they don't get people volunteering to leave, those people then apply for one of the jobs left and don't get it, they are them only entitled to statutory redundancy. It just all seems a bit 'wrong' to me, so would be great to know if this is normal or not. Thanks!

Yes sounds legal and the norm in my industry.
They are motivated to keep redundancies low and therefore will offer enhanced for voluntary.

Sounds fine so far (I'm an employment lawyer). Once they have the picture re volunteers, and assuming they don't have 4 volunteers, they should start the formal selection and consultation process.

They might not need any process at all, so perhaps they are waiting to see what the picture is with regards to volunteers before they bother with that. Once they know how many volunteers there are, they will presumably then propose a method of selection and will consult on it, so you should have an opportunity to ask questions about the process/make alternative suggestions at that point.

Some people mighT prefer to take the money and run. We were asked for volunteers before I was made redundant.

A horrible situation to be in atm. It sounds normal though to ask for volunteers first. What does it say about redundancy in your employment contract? If it states you will be given 3 months notice, or paid notice in leau, in contract then they would still have to honour that.
