Worst reaction to asking for promotion/ career advancement

Middle manager here

Big org

Last couple of performance reviews I've stopped asking about advancement opportunities because the last time I did

"I'm amazed that you asked, you're so far away from that next level."

What's the worst reaction you've ever had to asking for progression?!

I asked what else I would need to do to get a promotion, on top of being the best in the department. "Oh, you'd need to do something really special, like walk on water." Thanks. Very constructive. I suspect what they really meant was, "have a penis."

I work in a zero hour job and have for 5 years. I said yes to every 7am phonecall cancelled loads of personal events at the drop of a hat to work short notice. Kept asking for more hours on the chart. New guy comes in has worked here for 2 years has been given a full time. Contract and my hours have been cut.

In my field we need credits to be signed off for a promotion or new duties/responsibilities, complete with pay rise. My line manager had an extended leave for 6 months. In the interim my team leader carried out my performance review, she was highly complimentary and signed me off for promotion. She was essentially my line manager over the previous 6 months, through a hectic/understaffed period, so knew my strengths inside out. She really relied on me as I was highly competent.

Unfortunately my line manager returned days after and wanted to redo my performance review as she had nothing else to do. It was humiliating. She “bumped” me down in credits because she hadn’t personally seen me carry out certain things - of course she hadn’t - she had been gone for 6 months and was completely unaware of how much more senior I had become in her absence, particularly as we didn’t work together much prior to that. She still signed off the promotion but made me feel so shit at my job by refusing to sign off other basic aspects. It was belittling as I had worked so hard in that role.

I transferred within weeks as she was an awful manager, it was SO satisfying seeing her reaction when I handed in my notice. Of course she managed to cock up the paperwork and my pay rise was delayed🙄

I worked for a BS too. One of the ladies was promoted to deputy manager. I never knew there was a position going and neither did my colleague who was in maternity. We both left. I had a chat with my manager about it, she didn’t like being put on the spot, so I scanned across my notice to her the next day. She couldn’t even get to talk to me. It was a big ‘fuck you!’ from me.
