casual work and covid-19

I am an exam invigilator for 2 different educational establishments on casual contracts.

I had agreed and booked shifts for March and May/June.

One establishment has stated that all the shifts I had agreed and booked before lockdown for May and June I will be paid for and in return I will do some on-line training during that time.

The other establishment states that as I am on a casual contract I am not entitled to any payment for shifts I am unable to fulfil due to lockdown despite the shifts being booked and agreed before lockdown.

How do I stand legally?

What does your contract say? Are you considered self-employed?

I am employed by the establishments. Will check contracts but I know they do not guarantee any work but this is work hours that were offered and accepted but obviously cant be worked now as an invigilator.

It would be unusual for someone who is a casual worker to be entitled to payment for shifts that aren’t available, unless perhaps the notice being given of the shifts being withdrawn was very short or non existent.

Check the exact terms of your contract to find out, but I’d be surprised.
