Dithering!!! do I take the new job??

I have been in my current job for 4 years and to be honest I am coasting! its not a challenge and at times I'm bored. The positive is that it is well paid, I have a certain amount of freedom and work office hours. For some time I've been looking for new jobs and I have finally been offered one! it is a challenging role, taking me well out of my comfort zone. I was really excited when I was offered it but now I'm thinking that I must be mad. Leaving an 'easy' role to incrrease my stress levels for no more money. I'm dithering. I haven't handed my notice in yet and haven't formally accepted the post (the new employers not fast off the mark with the paperwork).

I should also add the new job is secure my current isn't. I'm also a single parent to a 4 year old.

Any words of wisdom?? I have no gut feeling on this one at all, which is unlike me.

I've just done this - left a comfortable, easy-ish job I'd done for over 6 years to go for something new. I've only been in the new job a week but so far so good. Mine wasn't for any more money either, but I was fed up in my old job and stuck in a rut. What line of work are you in? Is your childcare OK? If you've been looking for a while you must be a bit unhappy in your current job, it could be a really good opportunity. For me it was now or never, if I'd turned this one down I would have stayed at my old company for ever (if they'd stayed in business that long)!

I've just in the process of changing jobs.

Gone from more security to less security

Less challenge to more challenge

More money

Am totally terrified. I'll hold your hand if you hold mine.

go

are you sure you don;t have a gut feeling? have you tried flipping a coin? I'm not suggesting you use the coin to make the decision - but you can use it to work out your gut reaction. heads you go. flip the coin. your stomach will tell you what you need to know.

I'm a nurse and will go from managing myself and my own caseload of patients to managing a team who need to change but are resistant to this. I've never managed a team really and I guess its that which is worrying me. I'm not that assertive!I also have a lot of freedom at present but loosing that will be balanced out by joining a supportive management team who want to see the unit move forward and develop.

My child care isn't an issue thats sorted. Its just whether I jump or stay put and coast along in a job which may go in the years to come.

I was going to say exactly the same as Hatwoman! I'm convinced you do have a gut feeling deep down somewhere. Do the coin thing and see what your reaction is..

(My opinion would be go for it, btw..)

tbh I would ask yourself what's the worst that can happen? If you go and you don;t like it - what would happen? maybe stick it for a year and then look for a new job more like your existing one? And, if you decide that that kind of job isn;t for you - I can;t see how it would be detrimental to your cv - especially as it's the difference between hands on and management. an honest account of your experience "I wanted to try management and in the period of a year I succesfully introduced a number of changes but I realised that my real strengths are in blah blah blah"

And if you go and do enjoy it - well brilliant.

For me, the main question would be how feasible would it be to pack it in if it's not what you want? if packing it in would be ok then I'd go for it.

Tried the coin thing but it didn't work. Have chatted to some colleagues though and I think I am going to go for it! if worst comes to the worst I move on again! if I stay here I think I will either die of boredom or be made redundant.

Thanks everyone.
