Missed Furlough Cut Off Date By a few DAYs 😭 Anyone else?

Aggggh. I’m so frustrated. I changed jobs at the end of February. Last day of work with my old employer was 29/2/2020 and my start date with my new job was 3/2/2020 so I’m not eligible for any help under the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme. My current employer wants to help me but can’t. There seems to be a lot of people in this situation. I am in a situated where I can survive but it’s still really, really awful. Some people are facing complete financial ruin as they aren’t eligible for any other state help.
Is there anything else I can do other than join the Facebook and Twitter group and write to my MP.
Is anyone else in the same situation?

You can ask your old work to place you back on payroll and furlough you, they don’t have to agree though :(

I left on good terms but unfortunately they just can’t help me. If I’d moved jobs two days earlier I’d be thousands of pound better off. It’s unbelievable 😭😭😭. I know there are people who are in a far far worse situation than I am at the moment. I’m lucky that I’m young and healthy but it’s still very worrying for me on top of all the other worries people have ay the moment.

It’s rubbish x

ā€I left on good terms but unfortunately they just can’t help me.ā€

Why is that? What reason have they given? Taking back ex employees does involve risks and liabilities so some employers are choosing not to, or are being careful, but in most cases they could even if they decide not to.

NoFurloughForMe · 08/04/2020 14:58

It is rubbish. I'm keeping it in perspective but it would be a such a massive relief to thousands of people if they could sort it. I just wanted a moan 😭😢😭

They don't want to and there is no obligation for them to help. They want to prioritise their current staff and don't want to pay out money that they won't get back for a couple of months. They are strapped themselves. I don't blame them but it really sucks 😢

I presume you're not entitled to state help in the form of benefits as you have savings. Are you employed but not able to work or have you lost your job? Is there no way you can work from home in your job?

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 08/04/2020 15:17

I started a job in mid march, right before lockdown, was right chuffed after being unployed for a while.
They had to let me go tho and I got paid 3 weeks money. I worry this will cause my UC to be cancelled and I'll be screwed.

flowery · 08/04/2020 15:33

Ok that's fair enough. Just wondered why the 'can't', but if they literally can't afford to fork out the money that makes sense.

Today HMRC has confirmed they are on track to have the portal up and running by 20 April - it's in testing now, and the aim is to have funds being paid over by the end of April, so it should hopefully be not long at all.

Doryhunky · 15/04/2020 21:59

I think they have now moved the qualifying date to March 19.

Comefromaway · 16/04/2020 01:07

Yes, had an amail from hmrc today to say that anyone employed on 19 March can be furloughed.

NoFurloughForMe · 18/04/2020 09:59

The date move doesn't help many people despite what HMRC says. You can only be eligible if your employers had sent RTI (Real time information) to HMRC BEFORE 20/3.

RTI is sent on payday or a few days before.

Most people are paid monthly at the end of the month so are STILL excluded.

Even some weekly paid people are still missing out as some employers only send in their RTI at the end of the month.

The date move sounded good but it isn't.

@flowery because it sound illegal and not what furloughing is about

Comefromaway · 18/04/2020 19:27

If you pay weekly you have to send an RTI weekly.

We run weekly and monthly. Our monthly payroll date is 23rd and we run payroll the Wednesday or Thursday before 23rd as our software insists it’s done with the weekly. Not that we took anyone on mind.

CinnabarRed · 18/04/2020 19:30

I’ve spoken to government ministers about this exact point (that the move to an RTI date cut off rather than start date cut off means fewer people are eligible not more). The Minister I spoke to said that it absolutely wasn’t the intention and will be corrected.

I wonder who you spoke to. I think they were talking rubbish unfortunately.
