Self isolating but working elsewhere

I am beyond incandescent.

The organisation I work for has been very decent with employees through all this. Anyone with any of the listed addition health issues has been wfh on full pay since the list was first issued. Most of them can't do anything resembling their usual job from home but are picking up what they can. Their still working colleagues are having to fill the gaps but are very understanding about that.

Thay won't be when they learn that one of the vulnerable wfh group is working in a local shop!

I am just so disappointed that someone we've cared for in this way would do this to us as an organisation, me as their manager and to their colleagues. I'm also furious that I now have to "deal with it" on top of picking up all the extra work in having to do because he is off.

What I'd like to do is rip him to shreds very vocally and publically but of course must remain professional.

How on earth do you maintain composure whilst dealing with someone who could do this?

Is this a job they have always had..ie worked 2 part time jobs?

If so then im not sure there is anything you can do.
If this is a new job they have got themselves then that would be an issue, wpuldnt have thought they can do that and i would be flagging that upto someone!

Makeitgoaway · 06/04/2020 09:04

It wouldn't surprise me Ilikewinter but not officially. Second jobs are supposed to be declared (required by our contracts) and this never has been. Even if he was working some hours there, he's now working there during the time he would normally be working for us.

I am the someone it's been flagged to!

No one wants to share my rage then? Grin

Am I over reacting?

Surely that's gross misconduct?
He should be sacked - he's moonlighting on the company's time. It wouldn't be tolerated normally, so I don't see why it should be now.

Makeitgoaway · 06/04/2020 10:48

Yes absolutely, so now I need to deal with that on top of everything else and it's probably put the 'kindness' we've shown to other staff at risk too, if people are going to abuse it...

Its just crap isnt it, I sympathise with you, its tough as it is right now without crappy employees making it harder for us managers!

Sconio123 · 06/04/2020 11:33

Working for someone else whilst being on full pay by you - undeclared 2nd job - shopwork whilst 'vulnerable'?

Personally would dismiss the twat - but if you're feeling charitable, furlough him at the very least.

The guy is taking the piss and as & when other employees catch wind of it, you could have a lot of hassle if you don't deal with it..

CrotchetyQuaver · 06/04/2020 11:39

you're not over reacting
Get all your ducks lined up in a row and sack him. If he's working elsewhere in your company's time, I think that's not going to be difficult. Just gather the evidence first.

Rystall · 06/04/2020 11:46

Any chance it’s a family business and he’s helping out while other staff are unwell? Keeping the business afloat? I know that’s probably clutching at straws but just in case there’s an angle you haven’t thought of.

Makeitgoaway · 06/04/2020 11:48

Of course, he needs to be sacked but it's not quite as straightforward as "you're fired"

He has a cock n bull story about knowing the chap in the shop who told him to go and help himself to some boxes in the store room, the ones he was seen moving whilst wearing shop issued PPE...

Makeitgoaway · 06/04/2020 11:49

It's not Rystall but if it were would that be OK? Too vulnerable to do the job he's paid for but happy to help out in an arguably higher risk environment?

OP posts:
Rystall · 06/04/2020 11:52

No, that’s not really ok either I suppose but I do understand the stress and emotion when a family business is involved.

daisypond · 06/04/2020 11:55

I don’t quite understand. If the employee is wfh, they are still working for you all day. When are they doing this other job?

Makeitgoaway · 06/04/2020 12:04

As I said in OP, we are calling it wfh and they are doing what they can, but most of the role can't be done at home. I had previously "had words" about him not being as responsive as I would like to phone calls and emails and now, I guess, I know why.

I think lots of people currently wfh aren't working as hard as they would in work (and many are) it depends on the role.
