Am I entitled to a proportion of bonus if I leave before the end of the year?

I leave my sales job in a few weeks to go part time in a different industry. I have been with my current employer for 6 years. I have hit some of the annual sales targets already and wondered whether anyone knew if I was therefore entitled to the bonus linked to the sales? Ideally I would want all of the bonus, but even a proportion based on the number of months worked this year would be nice! Surely my replacement won't get the bonus that is down to MY hard work, will they?

I didnt work in sales, but at our company you had to be in your job on a certain date, i.e. 31st March to qualify for the bonus which would be paid in the April. If you left the company on 20th March say, you would not be entitled to the bonus. All bonus schemes are different you need to find out if it monthly, bi-annual, annual etc etc.
Ask your HR department what the details are for your particular bonus scheme.
I doubt your replacement would be entitled to any bonus.

Thanks for the reply. In previous years there has been a proviso of being employed on a certain date to get bonus, but I can't find anything in writing for THIS year. I've asked a couple of colleagues, who said that they thought I wouldn't get anything as not employed by a certain date, but no one has seen anything in writing with a given date for this year, so I'm hoping I might be able to wangle something. I'll have to ask at my exit interview, I suppose!

monkeybar it will depend completely on the terms and conditions of your particular bonus scheme. I would be surprised if you do get anything, but you never know, worth checking. And I wouldn't have thought your replacement would get one either, or maybe only a proportion if he is employed at the key date.

If your not leaving for a few weeks, I'd ask now, if you wait until your exit interview it might be too late to do anything about it. Do you have an HR department where you work?

bottom line is, any bonus system worth its salt will be labelled 'discretionary', so you are reliant on their goodwill for this.
Have a chat with HR or whoever, pointing out all the marvellous sales you have made this year, and see how you get on.

One of the purposes of a bonus scheme is to operate as an incentive for retention. Your replacement will not get your bonus - but neither will you.
