Corona Virus Job Cuts and Hiring Freeze?!

PlanDeRaccordement · 13/03/2020 20:33

Hello,
Our company has implemented a hiring freeze and also is discussing cutting jobs if the market is affected too badly by Corona virus. I saw that many airlines are also doing this too.

I’m worried.

Is anyone else facing potential job loss during this pandemic?

I work in tourism but on a casual basis (one day a week usually) and I'm hearing similar rumours.

I can't work out if I'm in a better position than those on full time contracts.

Bonkersblond · 13/03/2020 21:44

We support the tourism industry, long term, it will filter through to us and redundancies will happen.

Mixitupalot · 13/03/2020 21:53

I work in hospitality, I’ve just joined a new group. We lost over £34,000 of business in 2 days. I hope it works out ok. There’s been no mention of cutting hours as yet.

PlanDeRaccordement · 14/03/2020 07:19

Thank you for the responses.
I’m just worried that if they do cut jobs, then everyone else will be too and that will make finding a new job almost impossible. I also think the company could cut jobs to avoid paying sick pay to people self isolating.

What sector are you working in @PlanDeRaccordement? I've just been offered a job but HR have so far taken 2 weeks to approve/confirm salary request and I'm now thinking they might be thinking of delaying it because of coronavirus. Not good! Feeling rather stressed about the whole thing. Also wondering if I should apply to other jobs.

PlanDeRaccordement · 14/03/2020 14:47

Tennsip,
I’m in property sector.

All sectors will be affected by the current crisis, but there is no reason to believe the economy won't bounce back over the coming year.

It's best to prepare for the worst and hope for the best if you think there may be job losses in the nearterm about how you'd be able to re-apply your skills in a different role if the worst came to the worst and jobs are shed in your sector.

Travel, leisure, restaurants, consumer goods and fashion industries will be hard hit, and already feeling the chill of social distancing. I expect the fall in investment values will undoubtedly affect the property sector, and with a reduction in consumer confidence people may be unwilling to make big decisions such as investing in moving house if their job situation is shaky..

We're freezing recruitment from Monday. No way to know how we can indict and train people. The office may not be open by the time they start. It's crazy to even think that.

There's no way I'd be looking to change role now unless in the events business or similar. If you have any protection through length of service, enhanced sick pay etc stay put.

PlanDeRaccordement · 14/03/2020 21:28

I’m not looking to change jobs. Just worried I might be forced into it by being cut. I’m a good worker, but senior and expensive.

Irrelevant if an employee is let go of, because a sector is struggling to "balance their books" - that's why it's best to stay realistic and look at possibilities in case that happens.

oh ☹ I started a new job in December and im terrified.
I absolutely hate this job and have been job hunting. I'm so scared I have to endure this for longer my boss is a bully

whatnow40 · 15/03/2020 18:01

I start a new job tomorrow. My self employed work has had to stop because of Corona so hopefully I can go back to it at some point.

bettycat81 · 15/03/2020 21:49

I was given a days work today (london tourism). 16 people were made redundant last week as a direct result. Our service will be severely reduced from tomorrow. I may not be offered more work for a while.

PlanDeRaccordement · 16/03/2020 08:51

Sorry to hear that bellycat. We are hearing rumours of cuts this morning so I think some will be made redundant this week.

Horrible to add this extra stress on people. Makes me have less sympathy for people sitting at home whining about being bored when they have no worry for losing their entire income!

A lot of firms are having recruitment freezes

When things come back, there'll be loads of displaced people competing for jobs so it'll take a while for the market to get back to a favourable position for candidates.
