Worried about reference

I worked at a local authority for about twenty years and loved it and had a lot of respect from colleagues. I had a really bad spell financially around the time of my divorce and applied for a slightly higher paid job elsewhere. I don’t get it, but a few months later when the financial pressures had eased they rang and offered me a position. I agonised but ultimately took the job. Within a couple of months I knew it was a mistake - my new boss is an awful bully and is making my life hell. She almost immediately demoted me and changed all my terms and conditions - I cry every day and feel anxious all the time. I have seen a job at another council doing the same job I left which I would love, but I am very worried my current employer would give me a terrible reference. I can easily get two glowing references from previous managers at the council I used to work for. Can I use them even though I am asked to provide a current or most recent employer as a reference? I need to get out of this place!!

If she gives you a bad reference you can take legal action. She needs to be very careful. Apply for the job and take it from there.

You can’t take legal action for a bad reference Hmm. The reference needs to be truthful. But it’s perfectly reasonable to give a bad, truthful reference.

Aren’t most references’x worked here from — to — etc’?

Any reference has to be accurate. Bad or good. Any reason you can’t give both your current employer and the glowing ones from previously?

Hi flowery - there is only space for two references on the application form but I could put one of the others in my co wrong letter/email maybe?

They probably won't take up the references until you've been or are about to be offered the job. By then they will probably understand why you are leaving, so the bad reference, if given, will be expected.

Put your other reference in the covering letter. It sounds as though the two council references will be more relevant to the job application, so you may be able to ask that they take up both of these as well as the soon-to-be-former employer.

Ok yes, so put your current employer and one of the previous ones on the form, then in the cover letter add the third one as well.

Thank you so much for your help xx I have been stressing so much about this!
