What to do with a sick note?

Sorry if this is a daft question...

I've been signed off by my GP (already had 7 days absence before seeing GP). Never had a sick note before so not sure about practicalities...

I've called and left a message informing my employer of this (no one available to speak to).

It would be a 2 hour trip to drop off the sick note in person, and I really don't think I can manage that just yet.

  • is it ok to wait until I go back to work (or am at least well enough to travel there and back) to give in the sick note?
  • should I email them a picture of the sick note?

Take photo and email it saying you did call but noone available. Tell them you are posting it in and post it. Feel better soon.

Depends on policy. At my work you can send in photo and either follow it by posting it or take it in on return. They need to see it and then you retain at work for records.

Scan and email

Mine email/text a pic of the sicknote then post it if they are off long term or just bring it when they return.

Great, thanks everyone. Hopefully not long term so will send a picture for now and fingers crossed I'll be able to get in sometime next week with the original.

Scan & email, and then post the hard copy if they need it if you're likely to be off longer.

My various workplaces have only ever asked for it on my return. However, each has required me to get in touch for each day I'm off, unless I've been signed off for a defined period in which case I can sleep through.

So contact your line manager by whatever means. Let them know you have been signed off, and ask if you need to post/photo+mail in the letter.
