Mental health nursing

Just looking for a bit of advice! I've just found out I'm pregnant! I'm a mental health nurse and I was actually assaulted on Saturday night! In light of this I feel I should tell my boss I'm pregnant but don't want to start telling people! I guess my question is how soon do I tell my boss I'm pregnant! Anyone else in high risk jobs able to help? Thanks x

OT working in forensic MH here..... I told my manager straight away due to the risks and was moved off the ward during my pregnancy. I didn't feel it was worth the risk! Patients are unpredictable Smile

Speak to your boss and ask them to keep your pregnancy confidential until you are ready for it to be general knowledge.

Your boss will keep it confidential (well, should in line with policy etc), although in reality others you work with might realise if you change duty or whatever they put in place to keep you safe. It's a personal decision, I would think it was worth it and tell my manager asap personally.

You tell your boss straight away so that they can risk assess (I’m a band 7 OT in mental health). Your boss should keep it confidential.

And congratulations!

I have worked in forensic environments for over 10 years and pregnant women are always removed from patient/prisoner contact after a risk assessment is carried out. I would speak to your manager ASAP and have a risk assessment done. I managed the risk myself until 12 weeks and asked for a risk assessment at that point.

My ward tend to move people to do office work with very limited patient contact after initial risk assessment.
You need to tell them ASAP.
