DBS and old caution

Very embarrassing situation here I'm hoping someone can help me with.

I'm just about to have an enhanced Dbs check for a position in a school and I'm concerned that an old caution from 34 years ago, when I was 15, will show up?

I stupidly got involved with the wrong crowd and we ended up shoplifting a small amount of makeup. Received a caution and thorough slap on the wrist and I've never taken as much as 1p from anyone since. Lesson learned completely.

Will this show on a check? I understand some things are now filtered off but I found a report to say that some childhood cautions are getting through and still showing?

Any help very much appreciated.

Even if it does, something that minor and from so long ago, will have no influence on their decision about whether or not to employ you.

teenytinybitworried · 29/02/2020 07:21

Thanks. I guess I'm just mortified thinking anyone would know about it and also, should I declare it up front?

I would declare up front. It will help to ease your mind if nothing else. I don't think it will be an issue - I know we've employed people in similar circumstances.

Part of my job is to advise schools on issues like this and I would be very surprised if this proved to be a barrier to your employment.

Before you have the check you should be asked to declare any criminal convictions, cautions, etc and although it sounds like this would almost certainly be filtered out this would be a good point to have a discussion with the head if you choose to.

You can get more information about what would be filtered from the DBS, which by the way is looking to filter more off the certificates, or Unlock, which is a organisation helping ex offenders in employment.

teenytinybitworried · 29/02/2020 07:43

Thanks all.
When an application is made, do you receive a copy of the certification too or does it only go to the employer?

We just had exactly this situation happen at my school for a midday supervisor role.
I work in the admin team. I saw the application form, no mention of anything. I carried out the DBS check, no mention of anything. I was not in the interview so don't know if anything was said there.
I get emailed when the check is complete and usually there's a phrase that says it's clear. This time there was a phrase that implied something would be on there. It did not say exactly what. I told the head that there was an issue.
When the new staff member brought in the DBS I read it and it was clear to see that they had some troubled times at the age of 15-17. But nothing since then.
They couldn't start work that day as hoped but instead came back for another interview with the head. There was a risk assessment carried out and the required paperwork filled out and then they were able to start work.

You don't say what role you're going for but I can't see that the process would be different to the one I described. I don't know what stage would be best to mention something. My person may not have said anything prior to it being revealed and it turned out okay apart from delaying their start date.

Hope that helps a bit Smile

Many thanks Loveaspiring.

Were you able to see the detail of the offence?
It's an Invigilator role so very part time/casual. I'm just going to front it up and declare it I think.

The certificate is sent to you. The school will get notification that the certificate has been issued and that will probably indicate if there is something on the certificate but not was it is

AllNewDownThere · 29/02/2020 08:05

Not WHAT it is

loveaspiring · 29/02/2020 08:06

No worries.

The details of the offence were on my person's actual DBS. You'll get sent it in the post and have to bring it in to school.
The details are sparse so it'll say date, cautioned for..... and that's about it.

TabbyStar · 29/02/2020 08:20

Many organisations wouldn't worry about this sort of thing as it was a long time ago, but they might refuse to employ someone who didn't mention something that then came up, so it's best to be honest. I have an old caution too, I've been CRBed once about 15 years ago and it didn't come up, but I'm not confident it never will.

underneaththeash · 29/02/2020 08:26

OP if it's just one caution, I don't think it will. As far as I know, a single caution for something 'minor' doesn't show after 2 years if the person is under 18, even on an enhanced DBS.

AuntyMcAoife · 29/02/2020 09:07

It won't show up on an advanced DBS.

teenytinybitworried · 29/02/2020 10:23

Underneaththeash - thanks, I'd found this bought also saw an article written in 2018 saying that the filtering system wasn't always used, hence my worry. Appreciate that's was a couple of years ago and I know that Unlock are campaigning to change things.
AuntyMcAoife - I really hope you're right...is this from experience or do you deal with them?
Thanks

Only relevant offences need to be revealed under two cautions depending on the position applied for.

Hellohellohi · 29/02/2020 15:34

Some things can get filtered off ? So I’m not sure it will come up. Try not to worry op
