Is it a problem to take on a fixed term contact then get pregnant?

Just really wondering how it would work if I took on a fixed term maternity cover contract and then got pregnant myself?

Would I be entitled to leave and maternity pay if I meet the qualifying indicators?

Would it be seen as an annoyance by the company is a big worry for me.

Yes you would be entitled to leave / pay provided you'd been there long enough but, tbh, yes it would be seen as a bit of a headache. How big a headache would depend on the size of the company and the type of work you're doing.

Legally it’s fine and you need to do what’s best for yourself but I doubt the Employer would be very happy about it

It’s just that I’ve just lost my job and I need a new one but we were looking to start TTC in a few months as would like to conceive before I’m 35 next year all being well.

It’s just difficult timing :(

Hi this exact thing happened to me. My due date and the end of my contract (which was a year long) were more or less the same. Because of the timing I ended up better off than if I hadn’t been pregnant- ie I I had to be paid some SMP (something like one months full pay, couple of months reduced) when my contract had in fact ended and then went on to maternity allowance. There’s was ALOT of confusion about how to interpret the rules/law, not least from me. This was in the NHS.
Just go for it- there’s never a ‘right time’ to get pregnant. No ones indispensable - I’m of the opinion that most employees would drop you like a stone if you weren’t needed. Prioritise you’re life/ needs.

Look, if you need the job just take it
You may not get pg straight away anyway.
As an employer I wouldnt be happy about it but there’s not much they can do other than not renew and they might not anyway

Thanks everyone for the help. If I’m offered an interview i will go for it.

This exact thing happened at a company I worked for a few years ago.

It did not go down well - all that time they invested in interviewing and reference checking, when they could have recruited someone else for the role who really wanted it and would stick it out.
