Asking for an overtime rate

Iwantmychairback · 18/02/2020 06:35

I always find it very hard to ask for anything so could do with some tips please.
Around two years ago I went from working 5 days a week to 3. At the time I agreed to come in and do extra days to cover for holidays, sickness and busy periods.
Last year, this meant I worked closer to 4 days a week than 3.
All extra days are paid at basic rate. I am on a salary.
The hourly paid people get paid all overtime at time and a half.
I need ideas please on how to approach the company director ( my immediate manager) to ask for the same without feeling like I’m being cheeky.

If it's a fair sized company I would expect there to be a policy for this already or something written in your contract.

At my work everyone gets normal rate up to 37.5 hours, anything over that they get overtime pay. So full timers get overtime rate for everything they do over their contracted hours. Part timers get normal rate until they've done 37.5 hours in a week. If they do more than 37.5 hours then they get overtime rate on the hours over 37.5.

It kind of makes it fair because if part timers got overtime rate for everything over their contracted hours, then they could go for a 3 day a week contract, then actually work 5 days. Meaning they got paid more than a full timer for doing the same hours.

Basic rate. Up to full time hours. Otherwise unfair.
But part timers doing extra do miss out on holiday.
Calculate how may days holiday and if it annoys you ask the manager re this.

I would agree with what has been said by other posters. Basic rate until you reach full time hours, overtime after that. Whether those hours are calculated weekly, monthly or annually ciild be up for discussion.

If the hourly paid staff are getting time and a half for hours over their contract regardless of whether they are part time or full time, you should ask for the same. If they’re all full time then you should ask for the same for hours worked over the full time week.

Make sure your holiday pay is adjusted to take into account regular overtime you do- it’s unlawful to only pay you for three days when you take a week off if you would normally/regularly work more.

I can see your point about overtime only applying once I have done full time hours (40), that makes sense. It’s just annoying that I give up my free days and don’t really benefit from it.
I will ask about the extra holidays though, hadn’t thought about that.
Thanks for helping me see it more clearly.
