Teachers - negotiation advice needed

I've been posting regularly over the past few weeks around this decision and I'm nearly there. I went to see my Head last week about going part time (only started back this term!) I think I want to do 3 days. I currently have 3 points. They used to be for Literacy and SMT but were now supposed to be for NQTs/students, transition, gifted and talented, SMT, Literacy. I know that I have the right to apply for part time work at my level but realisticlly I can't do all those responsibilities in 3 days and I am also messing the school about. (I have a difficult y6 class) Do I stick out to keep any of my points? If so how many? Or should I just concentrate being both a teacher and a Mum? I do like the management bit - its not about money.

I am going on maternity at xmas or just after...
my situation is slightly different as i want to go back part time after maternity. i have one management point but slightly different to yours. i also has one ds aged 2. I broached the subject with the head when I told him I was pregnant and he said somehting along the lines of 'i am not sure how i would ocnvince the governors to keep your responsibility role of you went part time'

I do know of several people who are HoDs and work part time and simply get paid pro rata

I was 2nd in dept on 2 points when I left to go on mat leave. I decided that i wanted to go part-time - like you, 3 days a week when I returned. I thought it wasn't fair to stay as 2nd in dept as the dept needed someone there 5 days a week and told the head this. He actually suggested that I keep my management points not for being 2nd in dept but for taking on other responsibilities. Therefore, i now have responsibility for performance management and mentoring new staff. I'd try to keep at least 1 or 2 of your points when you're negotiating.

It IS possible to do more than 'just' the teaching even when you're part-time. I've found it quite rewarding and it also means that I don't just feel like a spare part, which i miay have done if i didn't have other responsibilties. Good luck x

I kept my HOD role on 3 days a week and was paid pro rata, have to say I think the school got a good deal as the job still needed doing and they got to pay me 3/5 of the wage!

I'd stick out for a proportion of your points. Decide which you enjoy and go for it. look at the other thread that popsycal has put a link to-

another thing - think what's actually magageable if you're only doing 3 days. Last year my timetable was fairly light and I was able to fit my responsibilties into non-contact time. Thius year, though, my timetable is much heavier and i've had to ask my hod to cover me if I need time to see other staff for my perf management role, which he's agreed to as he hates it and is just grateful i'm doing it instead of him! I realise you won't have this with being a primary school teacher as you don't have non-contacts, but you still need to think about what will be realistic. I'm working much more in the evenings now as my 2 days off are taken up with dd.
