Any Medical Secretary's out there? Can you help me with some career advice?

I work in a area with medical links but not directly (think opticians) i enjoy the clinical/medical side of the role more than the retail and i am considering a change in career to become a medical secretary.

I just wondered what qualifications you have? Do you think id be best moving to a more administrative position in the NHS first with a view to progressing/applying for a more secretarial role once i have more relevant experience? Also a lot of posts i have seen require a RSA/OCR3 qualification, however you can no longer take this? Can anyone recommend some alternatives?

TIA!

I used to be one, got work easily through a temping agency and was with the same hospital for a long time. That would put you in a good position to know the organisation from the inside and apply for a permanent job with solid experience.

I feel so bad for my last post that I've reported it to MN myself and I'm leaving it to them to decide if they want to remove it or not Blush

@32ndOfFebtober apologise for my error, I am not actually a secretary yet might i add. Probably a good job if I can’t even get basic grammar right eh!

32nd - don’t worry, it’s a valid point which will hopefully help the OP and others.

I chinned a cafe once for a notice saying ‘sandwich’s made to order’.

There is no ‘ in a plural.
People get confused a lot as they don’t know how to use apostrophes.

No, @Bluestar, I apologise, I shouldn't have commented. I do commend you on not giving me a roasting, even though you'd have every right!

Bluestar1 · 04/02/2020 14:02

@Twenty2 it’s fine, it was a genuine typo I’ve got no reason to get worked up about it!

Pitman Training do a Medical Secretary module which will introduce you to medical terminology. I've worked as a medical secretary and PA to consultants and also in medical research, so medical terminology knowledge is helpful.

Audio typing is still widely used in medical settings, so that would be a useful skill to acquire. A good audio typist needs fast, accurate typing skills and excellent spelling and grammar.
