Is it true that part time workers who work bank holidays won't have to make up the part ratio hours after October?

I work Monday, Tuesday and Fridays and have always had to a large number of minus hours - particularly for Easter. I've heard that from October this will no longer happen and that the people who work Tuesdays, Wednesday and Thursdays will no longer be plus hours as well. I hope it is true - is it?

I know that the annual holiday entitlement is increasing from October - not sure if that helps - you need flowerybeanbag - she gave some excellent advice the last time there was a thread on pro rata/bank holiday entitlement.

ruddynorah · 28/08/2007 18:24

you don't have to do you? i don't. is this a new law that's going through to protect those who work for companies who make them do this?

flowerybeanbag · 28/08/2007 18:46

twototango thanks!
Hi brownie
Twototango is right, holiday entitlement is increasing from October to 24 days and will then go up to 28 days at some point, forget when without checking.
Basic reason for this is current statutory entitlement is 20 day but this can include bank holidays, of which there are normally 8 a year. So some companies were only giving 12 days plus bank holidays, although most were giving bank holidays on top. (with me so far?!). Increase in holidays will start to even this out, companies who currently give bank holidays on top will probably not increase their entitlement, companies who include bank holidays in the 20 days will be forced to increase.

After that longwinded explanation, basically your holiday entitlement may be going up, depending what you get at the moment, which may mean you don't have to make up for extra bank holidays you have had over your pro rata entitlement.

Good grief what a waffle that was, hope it makes sense!

Beautifully put - even I understood that explanation flowerybeanbag - and it doesn't even affect me

In my last job I worked part time but on Weds, Thurs and Fri so I never got bank hols - oh aprat from Good Friday. I was recently told that I should have had them pro rata (not sure if right or not) but never mind

TwoToTango · 28/08/2007 20:14

Yes you should quint see this thread explains it really well

flowerybeanbag · 28/08/2007 20:15

Yep you should always get pro rata bank hols quint. Rules are as a part timer you cannot be disadvantaged, so you should always get exactly what a f/t person would get only pro rata'd down obviously.

quint · 28/08/2007 22:20

Bugger!

I won't fall for that one again

Thanks

Because I work 60% I have to give 40% back on a bank holiday Monday, so had to take 3 hrs annula leave for yesterday.
cannot understand why as I cannot work it even if I wanted to.

SlightlyMadShockwave · 28/08/2007 22:34

Double bluff - it is because whilst full timers are entitled to 8 BHs , you are only entitled to 60% of those 8 days.

pinkteddy · 28/08/2007 22:35

Me too work 2.5 days and had to give back 2.5 hours. Annoying but its sort of included in my leave entitlement is my understanding
