Written warning

I recently made a mistake at work. A grievance was raised, I admitted the mistake from the beginning and tried to work with everyone from the beginning to rectify the situation and have been issued with a first written warning. I have accepted this, not appealing it and want to move on.

Manager has made it clear that she is not happy with me (some harsh words have been said) so after 4 years of being in my current role I feel its time to move on (also some relationship issues in the team that are just not workable anymore)

I want to apply for a job internally, but not sure how having a warning on my file will affect that. Do I have to admit to anyone that I have it until it expires (lasts 6 months) or can I just see what happens?

I already feel devastated that I have been issued it even though I fully accept it's my own fault, and just want to move on now.

It depends on your employer's policy I would think.

Where I work you would be automatically barred from applying for promotions/transfers while the written warning was active.

Where I work, the warning would have to have been over a year before to apply for internal positions. You wouldn't be able to hide it.

You will need to check your own employer's policy on this. Different organisations deal with it in different ways.

A written warning should lay out the expectations 're improvement etc and any time scales. You should receive a copy of all warning including verbal ones in writing as a record of what was agreed and how long it remains active. You may wish to ask what is on your record and if anything is still live.

Any new manager is obviously going to speak to your current boss. I wouldn't apply for anything until my snout had been clean for at least a year.

I would be inclined to look for a job in another company where you can start afresh. You’ve nothing to loose if you have to wait 6 to 12 mths anyway.

How bad was the mistake? An innocent mistake or something more serious? Why/how did you make the mistake?

Do you have an HR Dept? Can you ask them for advice?
