NHS band 5 ward based to community

Can anyone easily explain how much of a wage drop can be expected moving out of the wards (with nights/weekends) to community based working (mon-fri)?

Currently considering applying for a post which is nearer to home but unsure what the realities of the wage drop are.

At the moment I am top increment band 5 and do a minimum of 2 x 8 week nightshift rotations per year.

This page explains enhancements

www.nhsemployers.org/pay-pensions-and-reward/agenda-for-change/nhs-terms-and-conditions-of-service-handbook/unsocial-hours-payments

You'll be getting a 30% enhancement on late/night shifts and Saturdays and 60% on Sundays/bank holidays. How much of a real term drop you can expect depends exactly how much time you spend on unsocial hours. If for argument's sake you do about a third of your time on unsocial hours currently then went to 0 unsocial hours in new job, that would be about a 10% drop in (gross) salary depending on how many Sundays/bank holidays you do.

You could also work it out by working out your average monthly salary at the moment from your payslips (look at a 6-12 month period) and then compare this with the 'basic' top of Band 5 salary you'll get with no enhancements which is £30,112 outside London or £2509 p/month gross. It won't be 100% accurate as you may pay less tax/pension contributions on the lower salary but would be a good rough guide...

Are you going to MHS community i.e. district nursing / out patients etc. Or are you doing something like practice nursing? I left the NHS and work as a respiratory nurse advisor now and it was a huge increase to what I was on as band 5 NHS which is why I did it. So depending on what kind of job you're changing to?

It'd be CPN (NHS Scotland), currently in an 4 week period out of 14 shifts 2 are Saturday and 2 are Sunday.

That's useful thanks @maxelly I'll go study the link. I'm aware there will be some savings on my commute plus I'll have mileage expenses on the job. The main benefit would be the work/life balance.

It looks like a drop of around 10% on a monthly basis after (lower) deductions however the money I save on the commute will make up about 5% and I still fully I tend on doing bank shifts in the hospital to keep my skills up to date and boost my pay.

I was near the top of band 5 a few years ago and when I changed to a day ward so no nights just the odd sat/sun and I think I dropped about £200 bring home pay

I dropped about £300 per month but that was on 3 days per week
